Red Knots are slowly arriving back to Kiawah Island. Currently, there are hundreds of Red Knots on the island now, and more will continue to arrive in the coming weeks. Beachgoers are encouraged to maintain a respectful distance and avoid disturbing these shorebirds as they rest and feed.

It might seem strange, but did you know the Killdeer can often be found on open grassy areas such as golf courses and parks? If you are out and about keep your eye open on this shorebird than can be found on your evening stroll.

In addition to their great eyesight, ospreys have a third eyelid called a 'nictitating membrane' that protects their eyes when they dive into the water. These adaptions and the dark feathers surrounding their eyes that reduce glare make the osprey a master fisherman.

Town of Kiawah Island ornithologist Aaron Given just wrapped up the 2022 fall bird banding season. This was a record setting year for the island, and the local news even produced a short video for anyone interested.
