Earthquake on The Island of Hawaii.

Aloha - Nobody likes an earthquake but it is a fact of life in some places like Hawaii. The earthquake yesterday was felt in Kihei but there was no damage to report and everything seems fine. There is no tsunami expected after a 6.9 which hit yesterday at 12:30 local time. Officials from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory say the quake is the strongest in Hawaiʻi since 1975.

No worries though Paradise is still in one piece and as beautiful as ever.

Places to Go! NORTH SHORE DRIVE

The fun of Maui is to explore! there are plenty of leisure activities such as going to the beach, snorkling or surfing but that just scratches the surface of the real Maui The drive around the north end of the island on Highway 340 north and east from Kapalua is fantastic. It’s not as lush as the Hana drive and sometimes feels more like Ireland than Hawaii, but that’s what makes it interesting. You’ll find sensational coastal views with steep cliffs and the odd roadside stand or food truck, and there are excellent hikes along the coast near the Nakalele Blowhole, where water surges from the ocean and spews out of the rocks like a geyser. In the village of Kahakuloa, there’s not a lot to see but you’ll find a beautiful wooden church and a few places for shaved ice (Hawaiian snow cones) or banana bread and a couple of art galleries. Continue on past there on a narrow, snaking road high above the Pacific that takes you to the town of Wailuku, near the main Maui airport. Some folks who depart from the resorts near Kapalua and Napili like to turn around at the viewpoint for the massive rock called Kahakuloa Head and retreat back to Kapalua.

Have you ever been somewhere and afterward thought. " I missed something"? It happens to me all the time... The last time I was in Rome I was taking a taxi to the airport and the driver asked me what I saw on my vacation. I gave him a laundry list of my favorite spots but then he asked if I was able to see artifacts and museums I had never heard of... I was shocked. The same thing can happen to you on Maui. I have been to the beaches, I have been to the mega resorts, I drove the road to Hana and visited Haleakala and thought "ok, I have seen it all" - Well, let me let you in on a secret... you haven't. If you want to do something truly unforgettable and unique try the helicopter ride that takes you around the island to see the "parts unknown" (by tourists at least).... There is one that actually stops mid trip in the heart of the Maui Rain Forest for an amazing 30 minute private tour. You get to see the real Maui, off the beaten path and away from the crowds. After your stop you are whisked away again by helicopter back to Kahului. It isn't cheap but it is a thrilling adventure you will remember forever.... jump over to Maverick Tours for more information on that experience.

To fully experience Maui you have to go to the summit of Haleakalā. From the summit, surrounded by mist it seems you are on a different world and being there at sunrise is the experience of a lifetime. Bathed in the early light of sunrise, it is almost like a religious moment. Lookouts on the crater’s rim provide breathtaking views of the moonscape below, and the many cinder cones marching across it. The rest of this amazing park, which is divided into two distinct sections, is all about interacting with this mountain of solid lava, and the unique creations from mother nature that live there. You can hike down into the crater, follow lush trails on the slopes, or put your mountain bike through its paces. For the ultimate adventure, get a permit, bring a tent and camp beneath the stars. However you do it, the experience will stick with you.
