What changes should I expect when I come to Maui?
John and Leslie share on their most recent The Aloha 360 Podcast what to expect if you haven’t been to Maui lately. The magic is still here, but if you haven’t been here in the last few years, some things have changed. Here are our notes:
• Safe Travels Program - The rumors are correct! Cases and hospitalizations are down and Governor Ige has just announced the end of quarantine beginning March 25th! That means for domestic travelers you won’t need v@c card or pre-travel negative test results to enter the State. No more Safe Travel accounts and extra paperwork. International travelers will have to adhere to federal guidelines.
• Mask mandate is still required indoors.
• Restaurants no longer require v@c cards for indoor dining.
• World Whale Day - March 20th
• Since May 2019, we have a new rental car center with a 2-minute tram ride (much easier and faster to get your car.) Shaded, elevated, breezy.
• Turo - support local residents with a rental at better prices. Unless you have a special corporate deal, you’re spending more money and time with the National Rental Companies.
• Reservations - required for almost everything (restaurants, Wai’anapanapa black sand beach, activities, Haleakala sunrise, and more.)
• Entry and parking fees - Iao Valley, Makena State Park (Big Beach), Twin Falls
• Other than flight costs, most prices have gone up for most everything. Expect to pay more.
• Many restaurants modified their menus since shutdown. Many chefs have turned over too.
• Havens and Marlow are the products of great chefs that left to start their own thing.
• 90% of Maui residents are tied to the tourism economy and 30% of them left the island during the shutdown. Expect to see service slower but with the same “Aloha.”
• Airport - Luggage is taking longer to get during peak times.
• Iconic Spots that Closed Permanently - Da Kitchen (though Da Kitchen Cafe is now open in Kihei), Aloha Mixed Plate (replaced with Star Noodle), Mill House Restaurant (now opened again with Cafe O’Lei, not as good but still good.)
• New: Marlow and Mahalo Aleworks and Upcountry Sausage Co. are now open Upcountry. Havens in Kihei and their new food truck in Kahului. Many Food trucks have opened, with many food truck courts available across the island.
• Liza Pierce - New guide book. Maui 2020 and Beyond. Shares a lot of the changes. How to travel to Maui with respect and Aloha. Worth getting. Check out A Maui Blog
• Ultimate Air Trampoline Park Maui is great to visit in Kahului.
• PNW Coffee Roasters - Small Batch Specialist. Organic coffees from Kona, Columbian, Guatemalan, Ethiopian. Please support them!
