The Arizona state premier of Route 66: The Main Street of America will be held at The Orpheum Theater on Saturday, October 10. Winslow was the first town to receive remnants of the World Trade Center when retired Winslow Councilwoman Dee Rodriguez discovered that wreckage from the Twin Towers was available for those willing to collect it. That was a problem, transporting such huge pieces from NYC to Arizona, especially when with a budget of just $300 to create a memorial.
Businessman Bill Herron got in touch with Wal-Mart headquarters and the company stepped up, transporting the massive girders on a semi truck to their new home free of charge.
Meanwhile, locals came together to prepare the site on the edge of town and on September 6, 2002, the truck and the girders arrived. Despite inclement weather, the girders were installed and the Winslow 9/11 Memorial was dedicated at 5pm on September 11, 2002.
A plaque located at the memorial reads: ‘These two steel beams from the World Trade Center, entrusted to the citizens of Winslow by the City of New York, along with this flag that was flown at the Pentagon, stand as the centerpiece of our Remembrance Garden. The words "United We Stand" remind the world that we will not fear terrorism. We hereby dedicate this Garden to Northern Arizona's promise that 'WE WILL NEVER FORGET’.

Seligman keeps Route 66 history alive with a collection of restored buildings and its charming main street that has stood the test of time. A stop at Angel & Vilma Delgadillo's Original Route 66 Gift Shop has become a pilgrimage for Route 66 travelers. The mannequin-decorated Rusty Bolt , the Return to the 50's, the Motorporium, and more all offer an eclectic shopping experience with Route 66 memorabilia, vintage cars, and life-size statues on display.

The Delgadillo's Snow Cap is labeled the funniest food spot on 66. The Roadkill Cafe’ / Ok Saloon, whose theme of "You kill it, We grill it", will have you having as much fun ordering your food as eating it. Leave room for Westside Lilos Cafe's famous giant cinnamon rolls and carrot cake.

Quick history with Leah! Centuries before Route 66 was established, indigenous tribes created a well-used trade road traveling across northern Arizona.

For centuries indigenous groups created and used a network of trade routes throughout the continent. Much like Asia’s Silk Road, these prehistoric highways spread goods over long distances as traders traveled between villages. Northern Arizona’s diverse terrain and environment created opportunities to exchange a variety of commodities. Archaeological evidence suggests Arizona’s Ancient Puebloan communities were stops on a trade route that stretched eastward from California and north from Mexico.

The Preserve Route 66 grant is open as of today, and funds will be awarded in early 2027. These $10k grants are open to both Legacy Businesses as well as public entities/non-profits along the Route 66 corridor. Grant funding is a helpful resource for small businesses to accomplish projects like building repairs, new signage, marketing campaigns, educational pursuits, and more. Additionally, no match is required for the Preserve Route 66 grant.

It's National Dog Day! We love our furry friends 🐾🐶 Before hitting this historic highway, follow these practical tips to ensure you’re ready to share in this classic road trip with your four-legged travel companion.

Top Tips for Traveling Route 66 with Your Dog

🐾Identification: Make sure your dog wears an ID tag and has an up-to-date registered microchip. Carry a recent photo of your dog and one of you together in case you become separated.

🐾Stay hydrated: Arizona's desert climate can be deceptively dry. Pack plenty of water and a bowl for frequent breaks.

🐾Protect sensitive paws: Desert pavement can become dangerously hot. 🥵 Test surfaces with your hand before walking, consider training your dog to wear protective booties, and pack a blanket or pad to use as a heat barrier on restaurant patios.

🐾Verify pet policies: Always call ahead to confirm current pet rules and fees, as they can change.
