Before sunrise on Sept. 15, 1804, Aaron Burr was waiting for a canoe.

Just two months after his deadly duel with Alexander Hamilton, the sitting vice president was traveling along the Georgia coast. Writing to his daughter Theodosia from Frederica on St. Simons Island, Burr said he had unexpectedly secured a boat and was about to leave for St. Marys, possibly continuing south to the St. Johns River and St. Augustine.

He ended the letter with one wonderfully vivid detail: “I am writing to you before sunrise, and am now summoned to the boat (canoe).”

Burr made the journey. When he returned to St. Simons later that month, he wrote that he had been treated with “great kindness and respect at St. Mary’s.”

Local tradition holds that Burr was entertained in St. Marys by Major Archibald Clark at his home on Osborne Street. A 1936 plaque on the house still commemorates Burr’s visit.

Today, the c. 1801 home is known as The Federal Quarters. It's the oldest residence in St. Marys. More than two centuries after the famous duel, the house still preserves a fascinating Camden County connection to the aftermath of America’s most famous duel.

🔎 What’s the coolest sign of wildlife you’ve ever discovered?

🐾 Wildlife doesn’t always pose for the camera. Sometimes it leaves clues.

This , try looking for the signs instead of the sighting.

On a walk through Coastal Georgia, watch for tracks pressed into sand or mud. Look for burrows, freshly disturbed soil or holes where something has been digging. Scan tree trunks for cavities and pecking marks. And don’t forget to listen — sometimes a call from the canopy is your first clue that wildlife is nearby.

You might even recognize a few local calling cards: an oval gopher tortoise burrow with its apron of loose sand, or small, cone-shaped holes left behind by an armadillo searching the soil for food.

Turn your next trail walk into a wildlife detective hunt. Slow down. Look closely. Leave the clues where you find them.

A big fan of…
