4 spots available for our free open boat and day sail on 4/26 for those thinking about signing up for a trip.
1 spot left on 4/27. Both days start at 2 pm at Rondout Yacht Basin in Connelly, NY. You MUST rsvp as we only allow 6 people per trip. So send me a DM if you’d like to come. We’ll discuss life on board, logistics for hiking or climbing trips, how we have the boat setup for offshore passages or any other questions you might have.

Curtains going up for the pilot berth. We’re in the midst of multiple projects as the weather has been not very spring like. That has us working inside some days on certain things and outside on others as weather allows.

On another note, if you’re coming to the open boat and day sail on 4/26 and 4/27 please rsvp. We can only take 6 people each day. Sunday is almost full and Saturday has 4 spots left.

We will be doing one meetup on 4/26 and one on 4/27. Both start at 2 p.m. It is a good opportunity to come check out the boat, ask questions and discuss sailing, hiking, climbing or whatever else you may want to talk about in regards to a sailing trip on Resolution. Weather permitting (not raining) we will get out for a sail for about 1.5 or 2 hours as well. If the weather is terrible we will still be there with some snacks, coffee and tea and we can hang down in the cabin and talk about boats and adventures. We are also offering anyone who books a trip that weekend a 15% discount so if you’re on the fence about a trip that’s the weekend to book. We have to limit each day to 6 people so please check in and reserve your spot ahead of time. You can send a DM or email. The boat will be docked at Rondout Yacht Basin in Connelly, NY. That is at 102 First Street in Connelly. Looking forward to meeting you all!

She’s just about ready to start the season. Splash day is on 4/7. A couple of British racers at a yard in the Caribbean once said to me “she looks quite fit”. I tend to agree.

If you’re on the fence about a sailing trip and would like a tour of the boat this is the time to check her out. You can see sleeping arrangements on board, how we cook, storage for those needing to bring hiking gear, camera gear, climbing gear, etc. This will be a focus on answering questions regarding offshore sailing and our other expedition trips. Good opportunity to ask questions about anything regarding our trips or offshore sailing. We will talk a bit at the dock and go for a sail. Limited to 6 people per sail. Hopefully we can squeeze in 3 sails that weekend. For anyone who books a trip during the weekend there is a 15% discount. I’ll update the exact times shortly as I need to plan for the tides because getting under the 9W bridge is a trick at high tide. Stay tuned.

T-shirts are in. When you come sailing with us let me know if you’d like a shirt and let me know your size. Unisex 50/50 cotton polyester blend. They’re free when you come on a trip. Sweatshirts are for crew members and folks that have put some time in at the yard. These Carhartt hoodies are by far the best work wear I’ve owned. They’ve done a lot of scallop trips.

Exploring the abandoned outport of Grand Bruit. Beautiful, eerie and sad. We are tied up at the old ferry terminal in these photos. Wildlife and fantastic hiking is the name of the game here. Hard to describe the feeling of the large namesake waterfall running day and night drowning out most other sounds and being in a town with no other humans around. Just Caribou roaming around. You can join us to explore here this season by heading to our website at the link in our bio.

Benefits of a cutter rigged ketch

Options
•we have a variety of sail plan options you don’t have with other rigs such as a sloop or cutter. Anyone who has spent time offshore and hove to under mizzen or mizzen and staysail understands how simple it is. We often sail under Genoa and Mizzen in 20 knots of breeze with a helm so light you can steer with two fingers which is easy on the crew, autopilot or windvane.
•Since there are two smaller masts instead of one giant one the size of the individual sails are reduced which makes managing them much easier.

REDUNDANCY
• If we were to blow out a sail we have options to switch up the plan to keep us sailing until repairs are made.
•in the event of a rig failure we have a complete independent second mast to jury rig from if we didn’t lose both masts. So again, more options and being in the middle of nowhere the more options you have the better.
COMFORT AT ANCHOR
• when in an anchorage where wind and swell may not line up you can set your mizzen up to turn the boat into a more comfortable orientation to the sea state and the mizzen itself can help dampen the roll.

Last but not least Resolution rigged the way she is, is incredibly powerful off the wind.

CONS

•More rigging to maintain
•More windage that can effect upwind performance. That said, we can sail 45 degrees off the wind if need be even with a moderate sea state, but we often don’t sail that close to the wind for comforts sake. Nobody enjoys beating and I’ll often fall off the wind a bit and take a little longer to arrive to reduce wear on crew and boat.

For real offshore sailing a split rig is the way to go. Especially as the boats get larger and crew smaller. It’s crazy to me seeing an older couple sailing a 60 foot sloop rigged or Solent rigged Oyster two handed. When things go wrong and they will, the ease of handling a split rig of that size would be appreciated.

Already looking ahead to the 2026 season. As of now the schedule that is up is the schedule, but remember you can book a custom trip during any of our scheduled trips as long as nobody else has booked it already. So if there’s a mission in mind such as big wall climbing in Newfoundland plan early to lock in your dates.

Not an exciting sailing video, beautiful beach or mountain view, but this lee board project came out exactly how I’d hoped. It took a lot of effort to try and make it fit in with the rest of the original woodworking on board. Pilot berth is finally a proper sea berth and in most conditions no lee cloth will be needed.

Our first trips of the season are coming soon! Our second trip of the year is a sail training trip to Bermuda and we have three bunks still available. The perfect trip to gain some real offshore experience for the aspiring bluewater cruiser. As someone whos crossed the stream and worked in it for a good portion of my life this trips gets me excited to share that experience with you. I can’t stress enough how neat it is leaving New England and 4 or 5 days later seeing the electric blue and coral reefs of Bermuda. If you’re interested head over to our website to learn more.

Newfoundland part 1: Since we have a couple of these trips on the calendar and it’s one of the most photogenic places I have ever been this will be a multi-part post. Dates available: 8/22/2025 - 8/31/2025

North Sydney, Nova Scotia, South Coast Newfoundland Exploration and end in Port Aux Basque, Newfoundland

Price Per Person: $1900.00

We leave North Sydney around dinner time and cross the Cabot Straight. We will make an early morning landfall along south coast of Newfoundland and we will start to explore. Gigantic waterfalls, long fjords with 1000 foot high cliffs, abandoned towns such as Grand Bruit, small fishing outports, lots of hiking in the tundra, moose, caribou, the list goes on. THE most wild and pristine place I have ever sailed. Jaw dropping beauty around every turn is not an over exaggeration. You will never forget this coastline. At the end of our trip we return to Port Aux Basque where you can find a room, take the ferry back to North Sydney or take public transportation to the airport just outside of Corner Brook.

My favorite thing about sailing is getting off the beaten path and this trip is just that. Sailing the Bras d’Or Lake is just absolutely amazing. One of the most unique sailing experiences I’ve had. To go from the cold and desolate coast of Nova Scotia to sailing on a lake is pretty surreal. 8/8/2025 - 8/18/2025

Rockland, Maine - North Sydney, Nova Scotia

Price Per Person: $2,600.00

This will be a long trip navigating the Gulf Of Maine, south coast of Nova Scotia, through the lock of the St. Peter’s Canal and into the Bras d’Or Lake, a Unesco Biosphere Preserve. Then a few days sailing the lake on our way across Cape Breton to North Sydney where there is an airport for your return trip. I can’t explain how unique of a journey this one is. You have to sail it to understand it. You will be hard pressed to find another sailing adventure with as much variety as this.

Since we have 4 hiking and sailing trips in Maine scheduled I figured I’d post up a few more photos before moving on to our next trips. I’ve been a lot of places in the world, but Maine is up there with the most incredible places I’ve been. Hiking different islands and exploring peaceful anchorages with a focus on enjoying the natural world. All while moving silently under sail in sheltered water. Does it get any better than that? If hiking and sailing sounds up you’re alley come check out our 2025 schedule and come join us! Another plus for traveling by sail is the ability to visit Acadia National Park without dealing with parking! No parking to deal with and there is a free shuttle bus service to every trailhead just a few hundred yards from the dock and the best view in the house onboard Resolution.

Talking to a friend delivering a boat today and he was making a write up of all thru hull locations on the customers boat. This got me thinking that I haven’t seen any recreational boats with this kind of detail. We have this framed right in the saloon where I encourage everyone onboard to take note of where all our safety equipment lives and the seacock locations. If something ever happened to you in an emergency would your crew/guests know where to begin looking for water ingress? Or remember where the ditch bag is? It’s easy to get complacent in anything we do, but being offshore can be serious business. Take some time this offseason to think about the what if’s.

Another winter improvement project. Most sailboats make use of Lee clothes to keep you in your bunk. They work, but on fishing boats we use these Lee boards with a cutout in the middle to get in and out easier as you can see in the second photo. On Resolution this winter we will be repurposing our back rests and turning them into permanent, bomber Lee boards which then also gives better access to storage which will be phase two of this project. Our boards will be a bit taller than the fishing boat bunks in the second photo and we will still have a Lee cloth just in case, but these will make life easier for whoever sleeps in the pilot berth as you do not need to undo the Lee cloth every time you get in or out.
