Breakfast on the Boat will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, at the CSS Neuse II located at 118 North Herritage Street in Kinston. Breakfast will be cooked on site and feature scrambled eggs, bacon, link sausage, grits, biscuit, and beverages including coffee, water, and orange juice.

The Gunboat Boys will be on hand to provide live entertainment with period and bluegrass music.

Remember: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day - especially on Saturday, April 26!

Billboards into Kinston once proclaimed the city the "world's foremost to***co center." Factories and warehouses kept the money and the people flowing in, including jazz and soul greats like Duke Ellington and Ray Charles, who played to crowds in those warehouses into the 1960s.

High-end clothing stores, salons, banks, and restaurants lined the "Magic Mile" along Queen Street. As in so many other towns in the 20th century, though, the decline of the to***co industry seemed to signal the end of Kinston's prosperity. But Kinston is resilient, and its residents weren't ready to give up on their community.

The Governor Richard Caswell Memorial honors one of Kinston's most important citizens. A native of Maryland, Caswell moved to North Carolina and settled in the area eventually known as Lenoir County.

An active member of the colonial militia, he participated in the Battle of Alamance against the Regulators in 1771. It was during the war that Caswell was chosen to be North Carolina's first elected governor and headed the committee that wrote the new state's constitution. He would eventually serve six one-year terms as governor both during and after the war.

Caswell's life ended during his public service in 1789. He suffered a fatal stroke while presiding over the state senate in Fayetteville. After a funeral service there, his body (according to tradition) was returned to Kinston for burial in a family cemetery.
