I asked John for his best pro tips for beginners getting into cycling.

He said the number one thing is getting a proper bike fit. That’s money very well spent and sets the foundation for everything else.

When it comes to gear, you don’t need a lot. Just a few quality pieces. A good pair of bib shorts makes a huge difference in comfort and how long you can ride. That’s something you don’t want to cheap out on.

He also recommends getting some guidance on training. Whether that’s coaching or just understanding how often and how hard you should be riding. A power meter and head unit can help a lot with that.

Start simple. Get the basics right.

I asked John what tools every rider should have at home to work on their bike.

He said you don’t need a full shop, but there are a few essentials. A good set of Allen wrenches is a must. Pedro’s makes a solid set. A multi tool is also key so you can keep it in your seat bag when you’re out riding.

He also recommends a chain checker so you can measure wear and know when it’s time to replace your chain. That alone can save your drivetrain.

For maintenance, a quick link tool and a disc alignment tool are both really useful. If your rotor gets slightly warped, you can adjust it easily instead of dealing with brake rub.

The more tools you have, the better, but these basics will cover most situations.

I asked John whether you should wax your chain or just use regular l**e.

He said if you’re a pro and have someone doing it for you, waxing is the way to go. But for most riders, doing a full wax setup at home is a lot of work. You have to clean the chain, melt the wax, and go through the whole process.

His recommendation for most people is simple. Use a dry wax l**e instead. It’s much easier, cleaner, and still gives you great performance without all the extra effort.

Something like Silca works really well.

I asked John what upgrades are actually worth the money in cycling.

He said honestly, most upgrades can be worth it, but a few stand out. One of the biggest is switching to tubeless tires. That alone can completely change how the bike feels and performs.

A power meter is another major upgrade if you’re serious about training. It gives you real data so you can train smarter and improve faster.

He also mentioned a one piece bar and stem setup, along with upgrading your tires to something more performance focused. Even something as simple as better tires can make you noticeably faster.

But his number one answer was simple. A custom built Gerard. Everything dialed in from the start.

I asked John how long a good bike should actually last.

He said realistically, a quality bike should last 10 to 15 years, no problem. And at Gerard Cycles, every bike they’ve built over the past 13 years is still out there being ridden today.

Most people don’t replace bikes because they have to. They do it because new technology comes out or they just want something different.

But a properly built bike should last until you decide you want to change it.

That’s what quality looks like.

I asked John how you actually find the right saddle, and he said the truth is, it’s trial and error.

There’s no perfect formula. You can get pressure mapped, spend hundreds of dollars, and still end up with something that doesn’t work. He even showed a 3D printed saddle that was custom made for him and it just didn’t feel right.

At Gerard Cycles they often start people on a Fizik Aliante, which tends to work well for a lot of riders, but the real process is trying different options until something fits and feels right.

That’s why proper fitting and experience matter. You don’t stop until you find the one that works.

I asked John how many bikes he’s built over the years and he said honestly, he’s lost count.

He estimates somewhere between a couple hundred to a couple thousand at this point. When you’ve been doing it this long, it all starts to blend together.

I asked how many more he plans on building and he said they’re still going strong. Building about three to four bikes a week, which comes out to roughly 200 a year.

He plans to keep going as long as he can.

When you’ve got that kind of experience behind what you’re building, it shows.

I asked John who the greatest rider he’s ever raced against is, and his answer says a lot about his career.

He said it comes down to Sean Kelly or Stephen Roche. Two absolute legends of the sport. He gave Sean a slight edge, but mentioned that Stephen went on to win the Tour de France and the World Championship.

He also talked about racing against guys like Lance Armstrong, Greg LeMond at the Nissan Classic, and a number of other top riders over the years.

When you’ve lined up against names like that, your perspective is a little different.

I asked John for his top three cyclists of all time and his answer might start some debates.

Number one is Tadej Pogačar. He says right now he’s proven to be the best we’ve ever seen.

Number two is Eddy Merckx, who held that top spot for a long time but has now been pushed down to second.

And number three is Fausto Coppi, one of the true legends of the sport.

That’s his list. Agree or disagree?

I asked John for his top five rides in the Seattle area and he delivered a solid list.

Lake Washington loop is a classic. Mercer Island loop is another staple, crossing I 90 and looping back. The Snohomish bakery ride is a favorite for the mix of miles, coffee, and a pastry stop.

He also mentioned the two bridges ride, crossing 520 and I 90 in one loop. And his personal favorite, the Discovery Park loop. Riding from Kirkland through the trails, out to Magnolia, around Discovery Park, and back.

If you’re in Seattle, you’ve got no excuses.
