🌟 History & Heritage Thursday: The Great Shamokin Path

Today's peaceful 3.5-mile trail between NuMine and Rose Valley follows the old Rural Valley Railroad corridor, but its name holds a deeper story. This path echoes an ancient Native American route that once connected Kittanning to Sunbury, creating a vital link between the Allegheny and Susquehanna rivers.

In 1772, Moravian missionary Ettwein led 200 Delaware Indian converts along this ancient path, seeking refuge from a devastating smallpox epidemic. Their journey from the Susquehanna Valley through the wilderness to the Beaver River shows the vital role this route played in early Pennsylvania history.
