Finishing up an amazing knowledge exchange that spanned our nation. Starting in New York I was able to visit the Shinnecock Indians Kelp Farm on Long Island.
We then ferried across to Stonington Connecticut where our Friends at Stonington Kelp Farms put us up as a base for three more visits over 4 days. Starting with their own farm we finally got to see kelp in the water on the east coast! We followed this up with a trip to Greenwave’s headquarters to see both the new hatchery design as well as the processing line being put together for this years product. Next we traveled North to Matunuk Oyester bar and were presently surprised to find another past connection at Point Judith farms. We returned the following day and got a tour of both their kelp and oyster grow areas. The following day we hit the road and traveled north to Freeport Maine, we were greeted by Ken Sparta and immediately toured 3 kelp farms and 4 oyster farms all using different methods and equipment. After a delicious Kelp lunch served up at Freeport Oyster Bar we did a quick showing of “Portrait of a Seaweed Farmer”, followed by a Q and A session for the 40 or so attendees. The final day was spent learning about the Oyster Bar and going over the specifics for two potential upcoming business opportunities! In true us fashion we sped to Boston to have a quick dinner with one missed connection at Greenwave and heard live music so squeezed in a Heart concert!

Flying home I’m am again full of ideas, energy and excitement for the industry we are in. So many great people are doing so many great things. I get a chance to share this excitement with some of our federal delegates this week at CommFish in Kodiak.

I was able to attend a dinner at the Govenors mansion serving all Alaska Grown food. Excited to see the formation of the new department of agriculture in Alaska take shape. The fact that Alaskans import 95% of their food is mind bending, it truly inspires me to be apart of real change for the future of Alaskans and the way we eat. The mission to spend five dollars a week, on Alaskan Grown products is somthing we should all commit too. The way forward and to better fresh foods, rests solely on taking the time to support our local farmers and make sure we build proper systems for food security.

Thanks to all that attended Mariculture 101 lunch and learn sponsored by Representative Stutes as well. It was very refreshing to have such an engaged audience, and to get so many great questions and follow up conversations about the growth of our industry. Juneau is always a whirlwind of meetings, a worthwhile week spent in the capital leaves me hopeful yet again.
