What is the time difference from the continental U.S.?
Hawaii follows Hawaii Standard Time, which is five hours behind EST and two hours behind PST. Hawaii does not observe Daylight Savings Time, so add one extra hour to the time difference during this period (March–November).

Where is the main airport on Kauai?
Kauai’s main airport is Lihue Airport (LIH) in southeastern Lihue. (It’s about 30 minutes to Dunson Kauai from the airport)

What languages are spoken there?
English and Hawaiian

Do I need a car to get around Kauai?
It’s possible to get around Kauai by shuttle, tour bus, taxi or public transportation system. But to make the most of your time in Kauai, consider renting a car.

What should I pack on my trip to Kauai?
It’s warm on Kauai, so pack your summer attire. Bring a light, waterproof jacket or sweater for the evenings, a rain poncho for hiking trails in tropical rainforests and casual dress clothes or resort wear if you plan to experience some fine dining. Suits and ties are rarely worn here. You can buy Aloha Shirts and flip-flops (or slippers, as the locals call them) when you get here.

When is a good time to visit Kauai?
Anytime of year is a good time to visit Kauai. The average temperature ranges between 84 and 69 degrees Fahrenheit. Trade winds keep things comfortable year-round. Whale-watching season begins in December and ends in May. Peak whale-watching months are between January and early April.

When and where are Sunshine Markets (Farmers’ Markets) on Kauai?
Remember to get to the Sunshine Markets a little early, giving you first choice at the fresh fruits and vegetables.

Which beaches have lifeguards on Kauai?
Kekaha Beach, Salt Pond Beach Park, Poipu Beach Park, Lydgate, Kealia, Hanalei Bay, Haena Beach Park and Kee Beach (we do not advise going to Queen’s Bath because conditions are dangerous).

What are tipping guidelines?
U.S. standards apply: 15–20% on meals, at least $1 per bag for porters and at least $1–2 per night for housekeeping.

How can I get hiking/permit information on Kauai?
Please call the State Parks office at (808)-274-3444, where you can obtain hiking and camping permits for the State Parks (Kalalau and Kokee). If you are interested in obtaining a camping permit in one of the County Parks, please call the County Parks office at (808)-241-4463.

Where can I go bird watching on Kauai?
For a nominal entry fee, the Kilauea National Wildlife Refuge (at the Daniel K. Inouye Kilauea Point Lighthouse) is a special setting for bird lovers. Framed by breathtaking views of Kauai’s North Shore, Hawaii’s endangered birds can be seen nesting in the cliffs, including the Hawaiian Gallinule, red-footed bo***es, tropicbirds, albatrosses and frigate birds.

Good news: Governor Ige gives the greenlight to non-essential travel for fully vaccinated residents and visitors

Oct. 19: Gov. David Ige today announced the State of Hawaiʻi is safely open to vaccinated residents and visitors who are traveling domestically and between islands for business or pleasure, starting Nov. 1. “I think we are all encouraged by what we’ve seen over the last several weeks with the continuing trend of lower case counts,” said Gov. Ige. “Our hospitals are doing better, and we have fewer COVID patients in them. Most importantly, our health care system has responded, and we have the ability to move forward with economic recovery. Because of this, it is now safe for fully vaccinated residents and visitors to resume non-essential travel to and within the State of Hawaiʻi.”

And some encouraging news: "Kauai could be lifting some of its travel restrictions a month earlier than expected. Mayor Derek Kawakami announced he wants to opt back in to the state’s Safe Travels Program, making it much easier for tourists to visit the Garden Isle. Changes would go into effect April 5 ― if the governor signs off on the plan.

“So far, more than 24,000 doses of coronavirus vaccine have been administered on Kauai. The island’s total population is just over 70,000. Kawakami says if all goes according to plan he believes enough residents should have the shot by early next month to be able to safely loosen travel restrictions.”

Great condo with all the amenities we needed. Resort staff was very courteous and helpful. An amazing and beautiful sandy beach and a nice long hike nearby. We saw sea turtles and a seal along the beach in the morning. Gorgeous sunsets!

It’s not too early to book your fall or winter getaway at Dunson Kauai. A “bucket list” item for many is to tour the iconic fifteen-mile stretch of the Na Pali coast by boat and see its towering pali, 3,000’-5,000’ sea cliffs that drop straight down into the ocean. Take in breathtaking views of the famous shoreline’s spires, narrow valleys, streams and cascading waterfalls while also looking for dolphins and sea turtles. Some boat tours offer a breakfast and lunch and provide snorkel gear. Or take a catamaran cruise with dinner, drinks, and sunset views -- a wonderful way to end a day in paradise. Great news! The governor has approved a June 1 reopening of fitness centers, dine-in restaurant service and spas on Kauai. Beaches reopened May 15 with some guidelines for use but this means it’s OK to book your trip to the Dunson Kauai condo in paradise.
