Plan on traveling soon? Do you have a passport? Watch that expiration date. Also if you are applying for a passport make sure you give them plenty of time to get it processed and to you.

What does your birth certificate look like? In the early 1900's and before births, marriage, and deaths were recorded by family or the church. This was due to most births happened away from a hospital. Hospitals provided a Certificate of Live Birth. This was used as a record back then and today it serves as proof of birth until you get the official certificate from the state. Around 1950 the US Government started record keeping of these births and that is when the new birth certificates were created with a raised state seal on them.

With all this history which is cool comes the bad news. If you have never received an official birth certificate, you will need to order one from the county you were born in. You can not board a cruise ship with a Certificate of Live Birth.

Did you ever wonder why your cruise ship didn't rock in bad weather like the ones you see on TV ? It is because they have ship stabilizers. They are little wings/fins or rotors that stick out laterally on each side of the ship to help it balance in rough winds and waves. They rotate in and out of the ships hull as needed and are just below the waterline. Active fins are controlled by a gyroscopic control system. When the gyroscope senses the ship roll, it changes the fins' angle of attack so that the forward motion of the ship exerts force to counteract the roll. Ever wonder what the ship stabilizers look like? I have attached a pretty cool picture. These photos are from the recent dry dock for Celebrity Reflection. We all know the ships are large floating cities..... it is very interesting to see the perspective of size with the dock employee by the stabilizer.

The Bahamas plans to drop the requirements for cruise ship passengers and align protocols with air travel.
