Mahalo to our new friends and backyard cacao growers, Maggie and Billy! Last January, their son, who went to Haiku Elementary School some years back, won the gift certificate that we donated for the annual PTA fundraiser. Maggie and Billy learned so much that they invited this "Urban Cacao Forager" to come harvest! Our other cacao sources shifted their plans, so no harvesting for almost a year. Mahalo, once again! Solidarity = sustainability!

Happy blooming Monday! The 2024 vanilla harvest was bumper with over 1k beans. Wholly Vanilla! These ever so happy feisty vines started to bloom before harvest began a month ago! Who knew vanilla would grow at 1,900'?! Another successful science project at Kupa'a Farms!!!

Happy Funday Sunday! Another week or so for "sweating" of the vanilla, then dry to approximately 25 -30 % moisture content, then rest in a cool dark spot! If you want vanilla extract, splice a bean or 3, depending on how much of your favorite spirit you want to soak it in. We recommend plenty of time (not the herb!), which should be a minimum of 6-8 months, more than a year, more bettah!
This year, Maui Chocolate and Coffee Tours is going to spice our extract with a couple of Hawaiian chili peppers since a volunteer sprung up at the end of one of the rows in the vineyard! Great for our Ancient Hot Chocolate made hands-on by our guests during their tour!

Yay! We are so excited to have both: Keokea, grown coffee from lilinoe farm, AND handcrafted made on Maui chocolate from . We are sampling their 70% North Shore, Oahu, and 85% from Costa Esmeraldas, Ecuador. Other crafted in Hawaii chocolates include . We like to make the entire chocolate experience, from making ceremonial hot chocolate to our global chocolate tasting some good ol' educational fun! Some mainstay chocolate makers include from Vietnam crafted in Arizona, sourced in Boliva. And, of course, remember to smell and enjoy the coffee!!!

Trick or treat?! This fruit has fooled this guide in thinking they are a collection of seeds from the hala tree. Some people find them similar to jackfruit or durian. We know when Halloween is near when the fruit starts to drop in October. Now, if keiki would put these on their teeth rather than corn syrup, candy corn, they'd have much happier gums! These gems hold all types of medicinal qualities, and according to farmer Gerry, one is to help prevent gum disease. They are very fibrous with a fruity quality.

Look who is so excited to see you on the Maui COFFEE and Chocolate Adventure?! They are coming from beyond the woodwork to try a new Maui, specifically, Kula grown coffee! New to us. Lilinoe Farm has been nurturing their Arabica typica and catuaui coffee along with other yummy fruit since 1993. Yeppers, a slight trickle of Kula coffee is starting to find its way to us. We are the coffee whisperers!

That's right! The question often comes up. "Farmer Gerry, how you fruits grow so big?!" We'll, this Educational Fun Facilitator, Ann's, reply is ""Duh, it's all about the soil/dirt!" The organic alchemy department at Kupa'a Farms is one, if not the most important, element to the fruitful success at Kupa'a...plus, all the happy people!

In case you may have missed us, we're back, in our true "Intermittent gramer" spirit! For us, except for all the attention paid to our friends above, less is more for our social media realms! We appreciate all of our followers, so keep it up! We are so fortunate for the business we have. Sometimes, everyone needs a break! Rejuvenate, always, no matter what you do for work. We prefer to refer to work as play! Work & play = a balanced and fulfilling life!

Yes, the drying racks are constantly painting new pictures for us to share on our tours. Some may think it's only about chocolate and coffee, but come let us share Kupa'a farm magic! We appreciate our hosts because they allow us to share the tremendous educational value in farming.

Happy Tax Day! Just when you thought we dropped from the social scene, SURPRISE!!! A glorious, wonderful, and fabulous time was had by all who made it to the Who Cut The Cheese 20-year reunion on the North Shore, Oahu. When you live and savor the present moments, making memories, sometimes our IG revisits the Intermittent Gramer frequency! Please know that we think about y'all all the time, and we are so grateful for Maui Chocolate and Coffee Tours. It provides our guests and us with all with unparalleled experiences. It's about the experience, not the material things that matter. We create memories, not material things!

Spring has sprung! The wonders of Mother nature! The dwarf avocado was planted less than 8 months ago! The coffee tree, aka Cinderella, was spared stumping, so we have a beautiful educational tree to tell Maui's coffee story through the farming practices at Kupa'a farms. This tree is a volunteer. What does that mean? A bird probably popped out a seed, and up she/he sprang! It's a red catuaui and self pollinates. Quite efficiently so, in that almost 100% of the blossoms become coffee cherries in a matter of days! Wow! What a short gestation period! Blossoms, green fruit, and ripe fruit happen at the same time, making it necessary for hand harvesting.
