How many casino resorts have you visited with live alligators and turtles in the lobby?

That was my first clue that Paragon Casino Resort Paragon Casino Resort was going to be a very different experience.

From the moment you enter, you’re surrounded by the history and culture of the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana. Walking through the lobby, past tribal storytelling and straight into a swamp exhibit filled with live alligators and turtles, Paragon immediately feels unlike any casino resort I’ve visited.

My spacious room overlooked a massive indoor atrium where more alligators and turtles could be seen from the balcony.

The pool area was one of the biggest surprises—an indoor, temperature-controlled pool with waterfalls, hot tub, tiki bar, and even a DJ-led pool party while we were there.

La Vie Spa raised the experience even more with a 60-minute deep tissue massage, sauna, steam room, whirlpool bath, and even champagne after the massage.

And the fitness center? One of the largest hotel gyms I’ve seen anywhere.

Paragon turned out to be much more than a casino. It was one of the most unique resort experiences I’ve had in Louisiana.

One of the biggest surprises at Paragon Casino Resort was the food.

I expected typical casino food. I was completely wrong.

Stop one: the brunch buffet.

Along with your traditional American breakfast favorites, there was fried okra, mac and cheese, potato wedges, greens, hush puppies, fried fish, cornbread, and smoked sausage — all-you-can-eat and loaded with Louisiana comfort food.

There was also fried chicken, ribs, a full salad bar, and lemon meringue pie that definitely deserved a second round.

Stop two: Legends Steakhouse.

The experience shifted into elevated dining with lump crab meat, lamb lollipops, braised collard greens, and a perfectly cooked 14-ounce New York strip.

Stop three: The Draft Room.

We started with supreme nachos and finished with chargrilled oysters and garlic bread.

The next morning, breakfast at Roxy’s Diner brought it all home with two fried pork chops, grits, scrambled eggs, toast, and Mama’s cookie for dessert.

That’s what surprised me most about Paragon — from comfort food to upscale dining to classic Louisiana favorites, this was one of the most unexpected culinary experiences I’ve had at any casino.

Day 2 in New Orleans 🚲

One of the coolest perks of staying at Iris Motel was having complimentary bicycles to explore the city.

I started the morning with a ride down the Lafitte Greenway, stopped for breakfast and coffee at French Truck Coffee, checked out Bayou Bicycles, and finished the ride at beautiful Bayou St. John.

If you’re staying in Mid-City, this is one of the best ways to experience a different side of New Orleans.

One of my favorite brunch discoveries in New Orleans was Lola’s, just a seven-minute drive from where I was staying at Iris Motel.

Before the food even arrived, I was taken by the different-sized paella pans hanging around the bar and the photograph of Lola herself watching over the room. It immediately felt like a place with history, personality, and a story to tell.

I started with a Kimchi Bloody Mary, followed by the Oyster Pan Con Tomate with toasted house bread, sautéed spinach, fried Gulf oysters, and caviar. Then came the steak and eggs, which is usually my go-to order.

What impressed me most was the atmosphere. The chef was personally preparing every dish, the menu felt carefully designed, and everyone worked together like family. Not just because some of them are family, but because you could genuinely feel it throughout the restaurant.

Great food gets your attention. Great hospitality brings you back.

Balcony views, plenty of space, and takeout from Ernst Cafe made for a great New Orleans evening.

Sometimes the best way to experience a city is to slow down and enjoy where you’re staying.

This weekend started with a stay at Iris Motel The Iris Motel | New Orleans, a colorful boutique property with plenty of character and a great location for exploring the city.

After getting settled in, I headed over to for breakfast and a taste of local New Orleans flavor before a full weekend of food, music, and adventure.

I recently spent a few days at in New Orleans.

One of the things I enjoyed most was how easy it was to explore the city from this location. From relaxing at the property to grabbing breakfast at Majoria’s Commerce Restaurant , everything was just a short walk away.
