What a crazy lightning show over Sussex county. Each plus (+) is a ground strike. No coincidence, that's where all the outages are too. Quite the storm up there.

Quick gust of wind by the lake, and I'm not sure we even picked up 0.01" yet 😭 Just how the cards fall sometimes.

As of 920p, storms approach, but the severity is weaning. Probably a good downpour with a few rumbles and a good gust of wind around 10-11pm.

Hopefully we get something out of it, but I doubt it'll be much, at least locally.

A quick peek at the latest guidance suggests isolated pop up storms 5p-9p, with better odds for an area of potentially strong storms 9p-1a.

As we get into summer severe season, I like to take the opportunity to share some useful tools to stay weather aware. I do my best to provide as much information as I can, but there's no beating having access to a lightning alert on your phone or being able to pull up a radar with the touch of your thumb.

These aren't sponsorships. Just literally what I use on my phone, and what I feel are are good things to keep in your back pocket to stay safe and aware. And NWS warnings are not on the list, because I don't think there is a weather app that does not push those alerts to your phone. Any will do.

⚡Lightning Notifications
WeatherBug is a must (and there's a few others too). This gives you lightning Push Notifications on your phone when lightning gets within 10-15 miles of your location. Not a fan of their radar maps though, but the live lightning map is nice: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aws.android.elite

☁️☔⚡ Regional Satellite/Radar & lightning
College of Dupage is the best page for satellite that you can use on a phone, and the radar & lightning overlays make it top notch: https://weather.cod.edu/satrad/?parms=local-New_Jersey-truecolor-24-1-100-1&checked=radar-counties-usint-map-plot-glm_flash&colorbar=undefined

☔ Hi-Res Local Radar (Subscription, I think $10/yr)
RadarScope is professional grade, and probably the best radar on the market. My absolute go to. Includes warnings overlay: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.basevelocity.radarscope

☔ Local Radar (Free)
So I don't personally use this much since I have RadarScope, but I like AccuWeather for a Free Radar, especially since they include a 2hr future radar. I'd recommend also turning on severe weather alerts on this app, or some other weather app. That's also a must:

🤓 These, coupled with Weather & Wakes, and you'll never get caught in the rain.

And so it begins. We're now in week 27 of the ongoing NJ drought warning, and the njdep is now encouraging water conservation a bit more emphatically.

I've been harping on this now for months, and the time has finally arrived. Lawns are starting to crisp up, and while the lake level sits at a comfortable 9 ft, she's undoubtedly dropping. Currently with no rain, the lake would drop 1.50-1.75in per week as inflow drops to 25%, and our breakeven rainfall is about 1.30in.

For all the boaters, we are likely fine through July as we stay above 8.50ft, but the writing has been on the wall for a while that this could turn into a very interesting August and September.

The last Drought Emergency declaration in New Jersey was 2002. At this rate, the odds are increasing every day that 2026 becomes the next one.

I feel like when you think "summer", it's days like these. High humidity, temps getting to around 90, and storms bubbling up in the evenings. And that's what we have the next 2 days. Take it easy in that heat, and around 3-6pm, those clouds will start to look more menacing. I think our better storm threat starts 6-8pm both days. And with all the heat and humidity, I probably don't need to tell you, the storms can be strong. It doesn't look like a dominant line of storms, but another situation where if they hold together, we may get a severe thunderstorm warning.

For the weekend, we'll still be a bit humid but not nearly as bad, with temps still into the mid and upper 80s. Clouds will build on Sunday, any there will be a front that comes through late evening with a few showers and rumbles of thunder possible. This is what sets us back to near normal conditions for next week.

On the bright side with all this humidity, it tends to keep all the pollen at bay 🤧

Enjoy!

🚫🥵 Today was no heat, all humidity
🥵🥵 Next 2 days, all heat, all humidity.

Storms are likely the next 2 evenings, but the round of storms Friday brings the humidity down a tick for the weekend. Then a front Sunday night brings things back to normal for next week.

Heat lovers, rejoice, but Cool weather peeps, your weather is on the horizon.

I did call out that really chilly day for next week. That day may be Tuesday now, but there's a huge spread in the models for that day, with some still showing mid-60s. Taking the middle of the road for now.

As the song goes, the heat is on. Today is just the appetizer with mostly cloudy skies, temps into the 80s, and increased humidity. It's mostly precipitation free, but if you peek at radar, you'll see some spotty showers that could give up a ground wetting 15-30 minute shower. Then we have the outside chance for a pop-up storm after 3p, and a slightly better chance for a strong storm after 6pm.

Thursday, we get sun to start and more heat. We're dry again, but clouds build in the afternoon and an area of strong storms do flare up after 5pm. When we get this much humidity and sun, that's when we start to get the severe storms threats. This is why the NOAA SPC has us in level 2/5 for severe storms tomorrow and Friday (my new Matrix addition 🤓👍)

And then Friday, rinse and repeat. Mixed sun and clouds with so much heat and humidity and another area of storms possible after 5pm. You know how this goes. We may get dumped on 3 days in a row, we may get missed 3 days in a row, but the storms will be bubbling up out there, so have a way to receive those alerts. Thursday probably has the highest odds for severe storms in my opinion, but you'll need to be weather aware all 3 afternoons and evenings. Temps both days get to around 90 with real feels in the mid-90s

And then the weekend: how perfect is that? Mostly sunny, upper 80s, and on the humid side. 😍 Clouds may roll in late on Sunday with a shower or storm for late evening or overnight, but that'll be after a wonderful day.

⚠️Lots of water, and don't over do it the next 3 days! Heat impacts more people than storms, but you need to be aware of both 🥵⛈️

☀️ I know we always look at the first day of astronomical summer as the beginning, but I usually look at it as motivation to make the most out of every summer day. When it comes to the Sun, the start of summer is really the first step towards Fall. I know, it's a crazy statement, but in just 5 days, sunrises start to get later, and in just 12 days, that sweet first day of summer, the days do indeed start to get shorter.

😎 We've got some great days coming up over the next two weeks. Let's make the most of it.

Every once in a while, you get that head turner of a forecast. I see 67 pop up for the middle of next week and think, no way. Well, yes way. While it looks like next week will deliver pretty middle of the road temperatures and humidity most of the week, it does look like there will be one pretty chilly day in there.

One thing I tend to stay away from is forecasting record temperatures even 3 or 4 days in advance. Worth noting, the 30 year record lowest High temp for this time is around 62°. To put out a temperature in the mid to upper 60s this far out? Not as crazy as it sounds.

The psudo-stormy pattern also looks to continue, but with no real chance at an organized system, I'm still hoping these storms produce.
