This is a great example of how easy it is for a rappel accident to happen when we fail to heed to ALL points within a system. In this case, by failing to use locking and/or opposed non-lockers (prefer 3 in this case), how the rope can easily open both gates and free itself from the system.

It’s very sad that a tragedy like this took place, but it’s important to always remain diligent and never become complacent in your rope and anchoring management. Always double, triple + check and run over everything before weight loading a system. Rappelling has much higher statistics of injury and death and this is just one example as to why.

‼️ Shocking to see a belay this poor! As with any climbing role, paying attention is key! Feeling the tension and understanding how to effectively catch a falling climber is paramount to their safety… and others in the vicinity! 😳

Always be attentive in your role and make sure your skills are up-to-date to maintain safety for all in any climbing environment. 🧗🏻‍♀️

This is a great read and a good reminder, as more people have been spending an increasingly amount of time outdoors during the pandemic we’ve been faced with. Always be prepared and take the steps necessary to learn the proper gear that should be carried during every outing, basic medical skills and risk management.

With proper education and a good foundation of skills, there should never be a worry of venturing out into nature. Be safe out there and continue to explore the great outdoors as we welcome in the winter months ahead. ❄️☃️
