Situated on Cockspur Island near Savannah, Georgia, Fort Pulaski National Monument endures as a remarkably preserved 19th-century brick fortification, notable for its role in a significant Civil War battle where rifled cannons rendered masonry fortifications obsolete. As a National Park, it offers a range of activities, including historical tours, living history demonstrations, and outdoor pursuits such as hiking, biking, and birdwatching within its salt marshes, with a visitor center providing context on both its military and natural history.

The Olde Pink House, an esteemed Southern restaurant housed in a historic 18th-century mansion in Savannah, Georgia, boasts an elegant atmosphere and serves regional favorites including fried chicken and shrimp and grits. Its live music-filled basement tavern contributes significantly to its appeal. Although the restaurant offers a range of meal options, including lunch, dinner, and late-night dining, it tends to be pricey and busy, making reservations essential. The bar area is my favorite spot for a more casual dining experience. With the basement tavern not open during my visit, I took advantage of the opportunity to photograph the space.

Cades Cove Loop Road is an 11-mile, one-way scenic drive in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, famous for wildlife viewing (deer, bears, turkeys) and historic buildings like cabins, churches, and mills. Open sunrise to sunset, it takes 2-4 hours to drive, longer if hiking the trails like Abrams Falls. FYI, the loop is often closed to vehicles on Wednesdays from May to September for biking and walking.

In Savannah, Georgia, the American Prohibition Museum holds the distinction of being the country's first and only museum focused on Prohibition history, nestled within City Market. Through immersive exhibits, dioramas, and artifacts, the museum traces the trajectory of the Temperance movement to the repeal of the 18th Amendment, highlighting a faithfully recreated 1920s street scene, classic cars, and mobster memorabilia. The experience concludes with a visit to the functional speakeasy, "Congress Street Up," where guests can indulge in expertly crafted, period-specific cocktails or mocktails.

Savannah provided the backdrop for a recent culinary adventure, where we enjoyed high-quality food. Sorry Charlie's Oyster Bar is always noteworthy, featuring an impressive roasted oyster sampler and snapper wings. The Shrimp Factory also shone, with a dinner comprising shrimp cocktail, oysters Rockefeller, fish tacos, and crab legs.
