🐟 BlackH2oDog Charters ANNOUNCEMENT 🐟

We’re taking a few days off... but don’t worry, it’s for a very important business meeting.

The agenda:
✅ Find tuna
✅ Catch tuna
✅ Tell stories about the tuna that got away
✅ Repeat
We’ll be in Gloucester, Massachusetts, fishing WAY east of Kelly’s Island. And when we say way east, we mean "pack an extra thermos and check your GPS twice" east.
If you need us, we’ll be somewhere between Gloucester and "that looks like Europe."
We’ll be back soon with fresh tuna tales, questionable fish measurements, and hopefully all ten fingers.

🎣🐟 **Sunday, August 16th Fishing Report - Family, Fish, and Fun on Erie!** 🐟🎣

Earlier this summer, Andy and his son Drew were scheduled to fish with me while traveling home from a baseball tournament in Cooperstown. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans and a weather delay forced us to reschedule. Fast forward to mid-August, and Andy made the trip back, bringing along his brother Larry and nephew Joe for a great day on Lake Erie! ☀️🌊

This crew may be seasoned anglers, with plenty of experience chasing salmon on Lake Michigan and targeting walleye and other species in Canada, but fishing Erie with offshore inline planer boards wasn't really part of their playbook. Today turned into a fun learning experience as we worked through the spread, covering the ins and outs of Offshore boards, Big Fish Tuff Tackle Co. TrueTrip 50s, and Dipsy Divers. 🎣📚

We picked up right where we left off yesterday and headed back to the Roller Coasters, where a beautiful grade of fish was waiting for us. 🐟🔥

The rods stayed busy and the crew quickly got comfortable with some new techniques while stacking a very respectable cooler of Erie gold! 🏆🐟

With a Squall Watch posted and a great catch already in the box, we decided to call it an early success and head for the dock. Safety first! ⛈️⚓

Now it's time for those fresh walleye fillets to make their way to Bayside Provisions for some of their outstanding fish coating and batter mix. Nothing beats fresh Lake Erie walleye on the dinner table! 😋🍽️

🌅🎣 **Birthday Walleye Mission Accomplished!** 🎣🌅

Repeat customers George, Rachel, and Kayden jumped aboard BlackH2oDog Charters this morning at East Harbor State Park Marina, and we pointed the bow toward the soon-to-be-rising sun over Kelleys Island. 🚤☀️

Today's bite was more of a slow pick than a hot-and-heavy chew, but persistence paid off! 💪🐟

Early producers included:

As the wind laid down, the Dipseys and TruTrips got quiet, so we made a change. Adding **J7s** and **Jointed Flicker Shads**, then bumping the speed up to **2.4 mph**, was exactly what the walleyes wanted. That adjustment quickly put **9 more fish in the cooler!** 🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟

This fine Western Basin Lake Erie Walleye limit is soon to meet up with local favorite Bayside Provisions.

The crawler harness bite has been consistent, but I'm ready to get back to a full-on spoon program!

🎣 Not Every Fishing Story Starts With a Fish... 🎣

This morning's BlackH2oDog Charters trip had an unexpected twist before we ever left the dock.

Before sunrise, the boat was already trip-ready. Every rod had been prepped and checked, the cooler was iced down, and the nightcrawlers had been washed and sorted for the day's fishing. Just another reminder that a charter day starts long before the first client steps aboard and long before the first line hits the water.

The customers didn't show.
While nobody likes seeing an empty parking spot where excited anglers should be, charter deposits exist for a reason. The forfeited deposit helps cover a portion of the costs associated with reserving a captain, boat, bait, ice, equipment, and a day on the calendar that can't be rebooked at the last minute.

But as every captain knows, there is always work to do.
Instead of chasing walleye, I spent the day giving some much-needed attention to the gear. Several reels received fresh line, backup reels were completely re-spooled, and each Shimano Tekota was carefully calibrated with 400 feet of Maxima Ultragreen. Respooling and calibration is an important part of fishing accurately and consistently.

When one of those Off Shore Tackle Company planer boards go flying back with a walleye, rest assured we know exactly how much line is out... and exactly how much is coming back to the boat. 🎣💪

Most anglers see the rods go in the holders and the fish come over the rail. What they don't always see are the hours spent maintaining equipment, replacing line, calibrating reels, checking drags, tying leaders, and making sure everything is ready for the next crew.

So today's catch wasn't a limit of Lake Erie gold.

It was a fleet of freshly tuned reels, confidence in every setup, and one captain checking items off the never-ending "charter boat" to-do list. 😎

The silver lining? The next clients who step aboard will be fishing with equipment that's dialed in and ready for battle.
And who knows...maybe the fish were given one more day to grow. 🎣🐟

🎣 BlackH2oDog Charters Fishing Report

First-timers on Lake Erie and first-timers in the boat with BlackH2oDog Charters !
Maria and Oscar left West Harbor just after sunrise, and we pointed the bow east in search of Lake Erie Walleye. 🌅🎣
Big Fish Tuff Tackle Co. TruTrip 50s earned today's hardware 🏆, running 43' and 45' back with crawler harnesses. The fish definitely showed a preference for butterfly blades over Colorados, while BADMO LURES small gold tandem blades put a few more quality walleyes in the box.
On the Dipsey Divers, a #3 setting running 47' and 58' back produced on both a J9 and harness presentation.

The Off Shore Tackle Company OR-12 planer boards were a key part of the program. The hottest setup was a J9 running 20/50 with a 3 oz Guppy Weight, consistently finding active fish.

One thing we didn't mind seeing today? No sheephead and no white perch! 😎

The result was a great box of Lake Erie Walleye headed for the table, soon to be coated in local favorite Bayside Provisions Batter & Cracker Meal. Nothing beats fresh Erie walleye after a successful day on the water.

🎣 David and Kyle from D&W Excavating were up for a family vacation but managed to sneak away for a Lake Erie Islands Walleye casting charter to kick off their weekend!
We targeted shallow rock piles in 8-12 feet of water. Between Walleye bites, the Catfish and a few large sheephead kept everyone on their and their persistence paid off as they boxed a nice limit and even added a couple of quality bluegill to the mix.
The hot setup for the day was gold-bladed harnesses paired with 3/4 oz weights.
