**Important Occupancy Policy Update**

Dear Lat’s Cottages Guests,

We are sharing an important update regarding new Short-Term Rental (STR) regulations recently passed and being enforced by Chikaming Township as of March 23, 2026.

On February 12, 2026, the Township adopted Ordinance No. 164, which establishes maximum occupancy limits for licensed short-term rentals. You may review the full ordinance here:

Under this township ordinance, the maximum occupancy for each unit at Lat’s Cottages on the Lake is now limited to:

• Cottage #1 – 4 guests
• Cottage #2 – 2 guests
• Cottage #3 – 4 guests
• Lake House – 6 guests

Please note: under the ordinance, an occupant is defined as any person 1 day old and older.

As longtime owners of Lat’s Cottages, we are fully committed to complying with all township requirements to ensure the longevity of our family owned business. To meet these new standards, we are making interior modifications to ensure each unit aligns with required square footages per person, as our modest cottages do not currently meet these requirements.

We understand that many of our returning guests have traditionally stayed with extended family or larger groups that exceed these new limits. Unfortunately, due to this township-enforced ordinance, we will not be able to host more overnight guests than the permitted occupancy in each individual unit.

**However, we do have a solution for larger groups!**

Just 100 yards northeast of Lat's Cottages (toward Red Arrow Highway) within easy walking distance we have "Carries Cottage" which is available to accommodate your overflow guests. Carries Cottage can host up to 8 guests and features a 3-bedroom, 2-bath home plus an attached studio apartment with its own bath and kitchenette. This option allows your extended family and friends to still come and enjoy Lat’s Cottages property and beach with you during the day, and retire to alternate sleep quarters at night. They can enjoy all Lat's premises and amentities, they just are not able to sleep on the premises in excess of the township’s permitted occupancy limits.

We know this change may require adjustments in planning, and we truly appreciate your understanding and continued loyalty. If your upcoming reservation and guest list will be impacted by these township implemented limits, please reach out as soon as possible so that we we can help coordinate arrangements that work best for your group.

Some serious waves coming from all this wind!

DANGEROUS WAVES: A rapidly deepening area of low pressure is set to churn up the Great Lakes on Monday. With strong winds over the water, wave heights will max out between 25-30 feet on the open water. Lake Superior could even produce waves in EXCESS of 30 feet. These are some of the biggest numbers we've seen so far this season.

Cold air advection along with strong wind gusts will create freezing spray issues along the lakeshore with lake effect snow in there for good measure. Bottom line, it's going to be a wind-whipped start to next week as Mother Nature gives us a final flex to 2025.

“Holy sand, ice, and snow dunes Batman!”

A different scene in Harbor Country this weekend. Over the winter months, mountains of ice and sand build up as waves crash over, creating sand, ice, and snow dunes along the shore line. Some 10 feet and taller (the picture doesn’t do the landscape justice). It’s never a good idea to walk on the ice / sand dunes, but they sure are beautiful to look at!

Paul, the dogs, and the grandkids went for a stroll on this warm 55 degree day!

Wednesday is hump day? More like STUMP day!

With the chaotic storm last night sadly we lost two large trees (an oak and a locust tree) and half of our bird feeder tree. We are counting our blessings though as one of the trees fell very close to the cottages. Everyone is safe and the cottages unharmed. Many trees downed throughout the area some blocking roads and damaging homes with the 80mph winds.

Paul, Jenny, and her husband Scott have been working since this morning though and are making good progress.
