Why do Snow Geese visit the Great High Prairie in the winter?

Firstly, their summer breeding habitat in the Canadian Arctic is inhospitable and freezing cold this time of year with no available food sources โ€” so, they must migrate south for the winter. Southeast Colorado has productive winter habitat for Snow Geese and they have increased in much of their migratory and winter range. These birds have increasingly exploited agricultural environments, such as rice fields, hayfields, cornfields, and arable land, where they feed mainly on left-over cereal grains and grasses. Prowers County is definitely a favorite stopover on their migration route, especially in early February when their numbers peak here. A great time to host the High Plains Snow Goose Festival, an annual event to celebrate this fantastic bird!
