Small towns hold big stories. Wyatt Earp's connection to Lamar is one reminder that history can be found where you least expect it.

If you thought the movie 'Tombstone' explained why Wyatt Earp (and his brothers and Doc Holliday) ended up walking into the most famous 30 seconds of the old West at the OK Corral in Arizona, you saw just the closing scene of the story. Wyatt Earp walked out of the OK Corral and into infamy, but the beginning of the story started here, in the Ozarks. This is a good example of strange twists that can happen over time. Wyatt Earp started his career as a lawman in the Ozarks--in Lamar, Missouri, which the city has embraced. The forgotten part is that Earp left town under suspicion of embezzling public funds, and a federal warrant related to horse theft. The legend won out over time. You can always check out Wyatt Earp Park in Lamar, Missouri which commemorates Wyatt's time in Lamar, including a statue of him and his first wife, Urilla, who sadly died less than a year after they married.

Perhaps the best part of this photo is that as I was taking it, two women ran out of the building of which I was standing in front, excitedly looking at what I was taking a photo of, only to be disappointed that it was not a tornado. We are in the Ozarks for sure. 🌪🌪👀👀
