As we wrap up , we're reflecting on the people and stories that remind us why we do this work.
Access to safe, affordable housing isn't just about a roof over someone’s head—it’s about stability, healing, and giving back.
Meet one of our residents, whose journey embodies resilience, compassion, and the power of affordable housing:
🗣 "I was born in Puerto Rico, and my family came to America when I was one. I grew up in affordable housing in lower Manhattan.
At 19, I joined the Army during the Vietnam era. While stationed at Fort Jackson, SC, I met my husband from Columbia, PA—what a coincidence!
He passed away when we were both 49. I struggled to find work since I didn’t drive, relied on buses, and lacked computer skills. I eventually found a job through the Office of Aging but couldn’t afford housing.
I had to wait 14 years to apply for Social Security. I applied for affordable housing at Saint Peter Apartments, just a block away, but faced a 1-2 year wait. Thankfully, I got in after a year.
Many face even worse situations—homeless, living in cars, or earning just enough to disqualify for affordable housing but not enough for rent.
I hope speaking up creates more opportunities for others like me.
With the money I save, I buy yarn to knit and crochet for those in need—group homes, shelters, hospice, NICUs, and cancer patients. I’m a 6-year breast cancer survivor, paying it forward." - Magda
