DID YOU KNOW- HEADING TO ICELAND IN APRIL-HERE'S WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE WEATHER

April in Iceland is a transitional, wet, and windy month with temperatures ranging from 32-45 F.
At the beginning of the month, the sun typically rises around 6:45 AM and sets just after 8:15 PM, offering about 13 hours of daylight.
By the end of the month, Iceland's April daylight hours stretch to just over 16 hours, with sunrise at around 5:15 AM and sunset close to 9:25 PM in Reykjavik.

Pack layers: thermal base layers (merino wool), fleece mid-layers, waterproof/windproof pants, and a waterproof parka. Essential, sturdy hiking boots are required for unpredictable weather, alongside a swimsuit for hot springs, beanie, and gloves.

Key Packing Essentials for April
Layers: Thermal base layers (tops and bottoms), fleece jackets, sweaters, or hoodies.
Outerwear: Crucial! A waterproof, windproof, and insulated parka or jacket.
Bottoms: Waterproof hiking pants or trousers.
Footwear: Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good grip.
Accessories: Warm wool socks, gloves (bring extra pairs), beanies, and scarves.
Swimwear: A must for the Blue Lagoon and other hot springs.
Gear: Daypack, reusable water bottle, power bank, and European plug adapters.
Optional: Crampons/ice cleats for icy, snowy paths.

Important Tips
Avoid cotton: It does not dry quickly and will keep you cold.
Check conditions: Monitor road.is and safetravel.is for updates.
Layers are key: The weather can change from sun to rain or snow in minutes.
Footwear matters: Do not bring trainers; you will need durable, waterproof hiking boots

DID YOU KNOW- WHEN IN NORTH ICELAND AND CRAVING FISH & CHIPS-WE/VE GOT YOU COVERED

World-class fish and chips by Lake Mývatn
Everyone knows that Iceland is famous for its fish, in particular its high-quality cod.
Now there’s a restaurant by the shores of Lake Mývatn in North Iceland that’s just won an international award for its fantastic fish and chips!

Keeping things simple, Fish and Chips Lake Mývatn has quickly established itself as one of the best places in North Iceland to feed on fish and chips.
That’s now been recognised by the National Fish & Chip Awards.

Judges at the international fish and chips competition in London named this small building by an Icelandic lake the best fish-and-chips restaurant outside the UK.
It’s a three-family team that includes local fishermen, first opened in 2022, and dedicated to using the best and freshest fish available every day, with a focus on sustainability.

They make their own sauces from scratch every day, using family recipes and only carefully selected natural ingredients, free from palm oil.
If you’re in the area on your travels around Iceland this summer, add it to your list of potential places for an outstanding dinner! Their 2026 season begins on April 23rd.

DID YOU KNOW- IN ICELAND, IF YOU NEED A VEGAN MEAL-YOU'RE IN LUCK

2 Restaurants have won Best of Reykjavik Vegan

Kemuri-
Kemuri is an ambitious little pierogi house that has for the past year served more than just nostalgic Polish fare. Vegan and vegetarian, handmade and made in house, Kemuri is also the first and only Polish restaurant on Reykjavík’s high street.

With inspired takes on traditional pierogies (the sauerkraut and mushroom ones are particularly moreish), seasonal specials (wild mushrooms in the fall, festive offerings during the holidays), cakes and bakes, dining here feels like a personal dream buoyed and built by the community.

Chickpea -
With their scratch made food, and we mean scratch made — everything you see in the counters and on your plate is made fresh everyday by the small yet efficient team behind Chickpea. This is slow fast food done well, made intentionally, and with love.

The wraps are either sourdough flatbreads or slow raised pita, the pickles are ugly rejects or a tie up with local cooperatives, all the condiments – kimchi, sauces and schmears traverse through Moldova somewhat, but the real star, the falafels, are made in the tradition of the dish.

Dry chickpeas are soaked and ground coarse with plenty of fresh herbs a la the Levantine version or lean a bit more Nordic with the hot pink hued beetroot falafel. The wraps are filled to the seams, bursting with flavor and we strongly recommend saving space for one of their sweet treats to finish.

DID YOU KNOW- ICELAND AND THE ARCTIC FOXES

The Arctic fox is the only native terrestrial mammal in Iceland and can be regarded as the first settler.

It is well adapted to survive in the freezing Arctic winters, with thick and insulating fur. The Arctic fox has been listed as a flagship species to monitor climate effects on Arctic wildlife. Iceland has the largest population of the Nordic countries.

Most people know the white-coated fox of the Arctic that turns darker in the summer. Arctic foxes can also have a dark brown coat, termed “blue,” which does not turn white in the winter. Iceland has foxes of both colours, and the blue coat is more common in coastal areas, while the white coat is more likely found in the highlands.

The Arctic fox is a solitary species with a monogamous mating system, and the pair stays together for as long as both live. Breeding occurs once a year, the mating takes place in March, and most cubs are born in May.

DID YOU KNOW- IN ICELAND TRADITIONAL LAMB SOUP IS A STAPLE AND A VERY SIMPLE DISH TO PREPARE

Kjötsúpa (Icelandic lamb soup) is a quintessential staple of Icelandic cuisine, considered a traditional, hearty, and comforting national dish.

Dating back to the Viking era, it is a nourishing, broth-based soup made from lamb (often on the bone), root vegetables like rutabaga and carrots, and sometimes rice or potatoes.

Cold, the flu, hangover, winter blues that come with dark days and even a broken heart. It warms you from within and tastes delicious, reminding you of the basic joys of life.

Kjötsúpa (Traditional Icelandic Lamb Soup)

Icelandic lamb soup is simple fare, and the perfect comfort food for a cold night.
Ingredients

2 to 2 1/2 lbs 1 kg Mutton or Lamb (Shoulder or Neck), bone-in, cut into rough pieces
1 large rutabaga, Swede, chopped
4 large carrots, chopped
6 waxy potatoes, chopped1 onion, chopped
Salt and Pepper to Taste

Instructions
Place meat in a large soup pot, such as a 6-quart dutch oven, and cover with cool water.
Slowly bring the meat and water to a boil and then reduce the heat to very low.
Simmer the meat for about an hour, until it’s very tender. Skim away any surface scum (if necessary).
Add the chopped vegetables and simmer until they’re tender, about 20 more minutes.
Serve Kjötsúpa hot.
