November on Okaloosa Island is the beach for people who like the beach more than the crowd. 🌊

Heaven on Surf has November 8 through 25 open. Seventeen nights, so a long weekend, a week, or the kind of long stay that only makes sense in the off-season.

What November looks like from Heaven on Surf: days in the low seventies, evenings cool enough for a sweatshirt, and long walks where you might pass a handful of people. The building's pool is heated November through March (the HOA runs the heat), so getting in the water is still on the table.

It's an easy place to settle into. 765 square feet, which is roomy for a one-bedroom, with a full kitchen, a washer and dryer in the condo, and a Gulf view from the living room and the balcony. It's comfortable for two to four. One flight of stairs or a short elevator ride down, then a ramped dune walkover to the sand.

One straight thing: the beach chair and umbrella service runs March through October, so November is bring-your-own chairs.

Thanksgiving week is already booked. The two and a half weeks before it are the ones we'd pick anyway.

We've been at this long enough to know that nothing we write about Heaven on Surf lands like one sentence from somebody who stayed there. 💙

From Jamie, who brought her family of five to Heaven on Surf in August:

"This place was perfect for me and my family of 5. It was such a good location ... close to the pier and all the fun shops are just mins away. The hosts were quick to respond with any questions we had and the condo was very clean and had AMAZING ocean views! I hope to come back in the future!"

Two things in there we work hardest at, so it means something that she named both: clean, and easy to reach us. You are dealing with the owners, start to finish — not a call centre, not a number that goes to voicemail.

Fall dates are open at Heaven on Surf, and it's a quieter version of the trip Jamie took. Same condo, same water, a fraction of the people.

If you're staying on Okaloosa Island, the Boardwalk is your easy evening. 🦀

It sits about nine-tenths of a mile down the beach from Heaven on Surf — a fifteen to twenty minute walk on the sand, or a very short drive. What's there: four restaurants right on the water, the Okaloosa Island Pier next door, live music some nights, and shops to wander through while you decide where to eat.

Two things worth knowing:

🅿️ Parking is free. It's a county park, which is why — a rarity on this coast and a real reason to drive over instead of walk if you've got tired kids.
🎣 If you fish the pier, the daily fishing pass includes your Florida fishing license. You don't buy a separate one. There are two pass tiers — one to walk out and sightsee, one to fish — and the pier is about a quarter mile long, so the walk out is worth doing on its own.

Check the pier's current access details before you go; the operator sets hours and passes.

Sunset from the pier is a different view than from the sand, too — you're out past the beachfront line, so the sightline west opens up.

Still open for Halloween week at both beach homes. 🎃

🌊 Heaven on Surf, on Okaloosa Island in Fort Walton Beach — October 22 to November 1. Ten nights, take all of it or pick your stretch. A Gulf-view condo, right-sized for a couple or a small family.
🏡 Pure DESTINation, in Destin — October 26 to November 2. Seven nights. Three bedrooms and a private grill-out patio for a bigger group.

Halloween is on a Saturday this year, right in the middle of both.

Late October is the quiet reward for skipping summer. It's the driest month of the year here, the water is still worth getting into, and the Destin Fishing Rodeo is running on the harbor all month — free to walk up and watch the weigh-ins.

At both beach homes, two beach chairs and an umbrella are set up out on the sand for you every day through the end of October.

November is the month we'd pick for a group trip to Destin — and at Pure DESTINation, most of it is open. 🍂

November 8 through 25 is available. Seventeen nights, so a long weekend, a full week, or longer all fit, Veterans Day week included.

Here's what November looks like here: days in the low seventies, evenings cool enough that sitting out by the grill is the plan instead of an escape from the heat, and a beach so quiet you can actually hear it.

The house is built for being together. Three real bedrooms, a private grill-out patio, and a private community beach a two-minute walk from the front door. Pickleball and tennis on the grounds and a catch-and-release lake, for whoever needs something to do besides nothing.

One straight thing: our beach chair and umbrella service runs March through October, so a November stay is bring-your-own chairs. Everything else about the month is better than summer.

Thanksgiving week is already booked. The weeks before it are the ones we'd choose anyway.

The sand is a 2 to 3 minute walk from your front door. Pure DESTINation is Southbay 80, on the south side of the complex - the side closest to the water - and the south pool is closer still. No high rise, no lobby, no elevator. You park, you walk in your own front door, and the beach is right there.

We looked up the actual numbers, because "fall is nicer" is the kind of thing everybody says and nobody backs up. 📊

Pulling the National Weather Service's thirty-year normals for the Destin–Fort Walton Beach airport, which sits right between the two towns:

🌧️ October is the DRIEST month of the year here. August is the wettest. It isn't close.
🌡️ October days average in the low eighties, nights in the low sixties. July days average in the low nineties.
🍂 November days average in the low seventies — sweatshirt in the morning, sleeves up by lunch.

Add the part no chart shows: after Labor Day the crowds are gone, the water is still carrying all of summer's heat, and you can get a dinner table on a Saturday.

Summer is the famous season here. Fall is the good one.

Here's a free October thing almost no visitor knows about: the Destin Fishing Rodeo. 🎣

It starts today and runs the entire month of October, and it has been going since 1948 — this is one of the oldest fishing tournaments in the country and it happens right in the middle of town.

You don't need a boat and you don't need a ticket. The daily weigh-ins happen on the docks behind AJ's on the Destin harbor, and they are free and open to anybody who walks up. Boats come in, the crowd gathers, and things get hauled up on the scale that you will not believe came out of the water off this beach.

It is the single best reason to be in Destin in October that nobody puts in a brochure. Go on a day the weather is good, stand at the rail, and watch a town that calls itself the World's Luckiest Fishing Village prove the point.

The shopping afternoon, sorted — for the day somebody in your group has had enough sun. 🛍️

🏷️ Silver Sands Premium Outlets — more than a hundred outlet stores, open-air. One thing to know: despite the Destin mailing address, it is actually in MIRAMAR BEACH, about eight miles east on 98. Everybody gets this wrong and then wonders why the drive is longer than they expected. Save it for a clear day, since it's outdoors.

🛒 Destin Commons — eighty-plus stores, open-air and dog friendly, on Legendary Drive. This is the one with rainy-day contents built in: a cinema, a full Bass Pro Shops with a bowling alley inside it, and a climbable art installation the kids will not leave. Outside, there are nine interactive murals and they're free.

Neither one is a beach substitute. Both are a perfectly good three hours when somebody needs air conditioning and a different view.

Halloween is on a Saturday this year, and we have the beach week around it open. 🎃

Heaven on Surf on Okaloosa Island in Fort Walton Beach is available October 22 through November 1 — the last full week we have there with the beach service still running.

Late October on this coast is a genuinely great trick: the water is still swimmable, October is the driest month of the year here, days run warm and evenings finally cool off, and the beach belongs to whoever shows up. Two beach chairs and an umbrella are still set up for you out on the sand every day through the end of the month.

September is nearly gone at Heaven on Surf — but the best week of it is still open. 🌊

Our Gulf-view condo on Okaloosa Island in Fort Walton Beach is available September 27 through October 6. Ten straight nights, so take the whole stretch or pick your week out of it.

Late September into early October is our favorite window on this coast, and it isn't close. The Gulf is still warm from a full summer of sun. The crowds went back to school weeks ago. October is the driest month of the year here. And the light in the evening gets that low gold you only see once summer lets go.

It's an easy place to be. One flight of stairs or a short elevator ride from our door to ground level — no waiting on a high-rise elevator behind everybody's beach carts — then two or three minutes to the sand over a ramped dune walkover, so coolers and carts roll straight down. Low enough that you hear the surf instead of just looking at it. Two beach chairs and an umbrella are set up for you out on the sand every day through October.
