Labor Day weekend is here and both our homes have been full all weekend. 🎉

Thank you — genuinely. That's the last big weekend of summer done, and every bed in both places was spoken for.

So here's the honest follow-up, because people always ask: the next stretch we'd book for ourselves is the last week of September into early October. The summer crowd is gone, the water is still warm, and October is the driest month of the year here. It's the version of this coast we'd want you to see.

Both homes have dates open in that window. If a fall trip has been sitting in the back of your mind, this is the month to move it to the front.

There are sea turtle nests on our beach right now, and the season runs through October 31. 🐢

Most visitors have no idea. Here's the short version of being a good neighbor to them:

🌑 Lights out toward the water after dark. Hatchlings navigate by the brightest horizon, and a beachfront porch light or a phone flashlight sends them the wrong way. Close the blinds on beachfront windows at night.
🕳️ Fill in the holes the kids dug, and knock down the sandcastles before you head in. A hatchling that falls into a hole doesn't get out.
🪑 Take everything off the sand at the end of the day. Chairs, umbrellas, tents and toys left overnight are obstacles.
🚫 Never touch a nest, a marker, or a turtle — and if you see a nesting turtle or hatchlings, stay well back and keep the light off.

Okaloosa County has a lighting ordinance for exactly this reason, and it's one of the easiest good deeds on a beach trip. Flat, dark, clear sand. That's the whole ask.

October in Destin is the month locals keep for themselves — and this year we have it almost entirely open. 🍂

Here's why October is the one we'd choose: it's the driest month of the year on this coast, the Gulf is still carrying summer's warmth, the crowds went home in August, and the whole month the Destin Fishing Rodeo is running on the harbor — free to walk up and watch the boats weigh in.

☀️ The beach empties. School is back everywhere, and by the second week of September you can walk a long stretch of sand without stepping around anybody.
🌡️ The Gulf is at its warmest point of the entire year. A whole summer of sun went into that water, and it holds the heat deep into October.
🍽️ You can get a table. No hour-long wait, no calling three places.
🚗 Parking stops being a competitive sport.

Same sand, same water, a fraction of the people. If you've only ever come down in July, September and October are honestly a different coast.

Heaven on Surf on Okaloosa Island in Fort Walton Beach is open September 27 through October 6 — one of only two full weeks we have left there before November.

Late September into early October is our favorite window on this coast. The Gulf is still warm from a whole summer of sun, the summer crowds are gone once school is back, and October is the driest month of the year here.
