We are a short three months away from one of our favorite events to present at Fort Larned NHS: Candlelight Tour. Ask anyone who’s volunteered for it before and they can attest that it’s one of their favorite times to be at the fort (even surpassing firing the cannon sometimes). Join us this year as we bring the fort to light under candlelight as we explore the lack of standardization in military discipline in the 1860s. More details are soon to come, but this is a night of scripted fun that you won’t want to miss!
Use the link below to register as a volunteer for this event. If you have any questions, feel free to email us ([email protected]) or call us (620-285-6911) and ask about volunteer opportunities for Candlelight Tour.

It’s hard to believe that we’re less than two months away from our annual Labor Day weekend living history event, but time marches on! This year, we have a theme of “Feeling History” where we will aim to have a hands-on element in most of our programs. Not only will you get to see and learn about history, but you’ll be able to experience it as well. Details on exact programs are coming soon, so mark your calendars for this Labor Day weekend (September 5-7) and bring the whole family out for a Fort Larned experience unlike any other!
Note: due to Fort Larned NHS policy, firing of historic weapons requires participants to be park volunteers 18 or older who attend 6 hours of training per weapon system. So unfortunately, visitors are unable to fire historic weapons.
What historic practice would you like to learn about?

📣 ROAD TRIP ITINERARY! Larned, Kansas, is not just a historic stop on the Santa Fe Trail, which is remarkable, but it's also a rural destination offering visitors delicious local fare and shopping from store owners who truly care about the community.

I grew up visiting the region in the summers, but this was my first visit to Larned, which confirmed that it's a town deserving of an overnight stay, with historical tours, outdoor adventures, and a stroll through its downtown businesses. What is Camp 11 and where does it get its name? Simply put, Camp 11 is an event in which reenactors and living historians transport visitors back in time to see Fort Larned function as it originally would have, with the activity of soldiers and civilians alike.
This event gets its name from the 11th camp on Hancock’s Expedition of the Plains. While at Fort Larned, Hancock’s expedition was camped about one mile east of the Parade Grounds and his forces were there from April 7-13, 1867.
This year’s Camp 11 theme centers around performing Guard Duty by the book, meaning you’ll see guards around the fort protecting it from external and internal threats. We hope to see you on April 11 for this unique event as we truly bring Fort Larned to life again.
