LAST CALL: Registration for NMBR's El Coyote Expedition (ECE) closes next week. If your a seasoned "drive to thrive" adventurist, ECE is for you!
El Coyote Expedition [ECE]: Friday, April 24th through Sunday, April 26th, 2026 (Epic Weekender) – New Mexico Black Range’s “Master of the Wild” ultra-traverse and circumnavigation of the Gila.
This April, New Mexico Black Range will be leading an epic expedition route and experience through the heart of the Southwest’s wildest and most remote region—the 3.3-million-acre Gila National Forest. NMBR created the El Coyote Expedition specifically to captivate the purpose, pace, and rigors associated with NMBR’s regular non-guided fieldwork and scouting missions. The El Coyote Expedition combines two of NMBR’s remote fieldwork and scouting routes into a three-day monumental circumnavigation of the Gila’s farthest reaches. Seasoned and skilled overlanders “Masters of the Wild”, that desire long drive days, a brisk pace, and a full gamut of rugged terrain, will thrive during this adventure. Those enthusiasts that enjoy a more leisurely pace, less demanding driving conditions, more frequent scenic stops/breaks, and expanded educational and training opportunities should consider NMBR’s other overland-based trip offerings.
Ready for your next great adventure? DM for ECE details and registration.

Gila Legends Expedition [GLE]: Friday, July 10th through Monday, July 13th, 2026 - NMBR's Grand Traverse of the Gila National Forest. Ready for your next great adventure?

This July, NMBR will be guiding a four-day [300-mile] expedition that will traverse New Mexico’s vast and diverse Gila region. NMBR has guided American Expedition Vehicles, General Motors, Dometic USA, and a multitude of enthusiasts seeking adventure along the epic Gila Legends Expedition route.

This “expedition of a lifetime” includes a diverse range of scenery, history, terrain, and backroads found nowhere else in North America. Route landscape features will include desert, grassland, chaparral, canyon bottoms, and dense forest with elevations ranging from 4,375 to 9,750-feet. Areas of exploration will include Gila East, Black Range, Gila West, Gila North, and Continental Divide. The Gila Legends Expedition route will skirt the world’s first established wilderness areas—the Gila Wilderness & Aldo Leopold Wilderness. Road types and conditions will include washboards, two tracks, primitive non-maintained, graded, mountain shelf, dirt byway and (least of all) pavement. The Gila Legends Expedition will provide outstanding vistas, historic landmarks, wildlife viewing opportunities (including Mexican grey wolf territory), and aggressive elevation contours.

During the overland based adventure, NMBR will cover a variety of topics including area history, vehicle maintenance, overland kit overview, driving techniques, vehicle dynamics, and other overland-based skill building subjects.

Lower the Pressure, Raise the Performance: How Airing Down Transforms Your Off-Road Experience: Airing down involves reducing tire pressure to improve a vehicle's performance and comfort on off-road terrain. The primary benefits include:
•Enhanced Traction: Lowering pressure expands the tire's contact patch (the area touching the ground). This larger footprint provides better grip on loose surfaces like sand, mud, and snow, preventing the vehicle from sinking or slipping.
•Improved Ride Comfort: Softer tires act as a secondary suspension system, absorbing shocks from rocks, potholes, and washboard roads. This significantly reduces vibration and makes the journey more enjoyable for passengers.
•Reduced Risk of Punctures: An aired-down tire is more flexible and can conform around sharp objects rather than resisting and tearing. Think of it like a soft balloon that "wraps" around a stick rather than a firm one that pops.
•Less Strain on the Vehicle: By absorbing impacts, aired-down tires reduce the force transferred to the driveline, steering, and suspension components, potentially extending their lifespan.
•Environmental Protection: A wider footprint distributes the vehicle's weight more evenly, which minimizes the depth of ruts and helps prevent trail erosion.

Critical Safety Tips:
•Air Back Up: Always reinflate to manufacturer-recommended levels before returning to paved roads to avoid overheating, excessive tire wear, poor handling, or a blowout.
•Go Slower: The lower your tire pressure for off-pavement use, the slower you must drive to prevent the tire bead unseating from the rim (especially when turning).
•Beadlock Risk: On standard wheels on light trucks and SUVs, going below 10 PSI significantly increases the risk of "throwing a bead" (the tire popping off the rim).

Bear Aware in the Backcountry: This map shows the general ranges of black, grizzly, and polar bears in North America. It was created by combining species range maps. The ranges shown represent broad habitat areas rather than continuous presence or population density. Boundaries are approximate, overlap zones are common, and seasonal movement or recent range changes are not fully captured.

Being "bear aware" means respecting their home while keeping yourself and the bears safe. Whether you are traveling in bear country or living in an area they frequent, the goal is to avoid surprising them or attracting them with food. Stay bear aware by
carrying accessible bear spray, making noise, and hiking in groups. Secure all food, trash, and scented items in bear-resistant containers or vehicles. If you see a bear, do not run; back away slowly, speak calmly, and stand your ground if it approaches.

Day 2 & Mile 221 of NMBR's El Coyote Expedition. Ready for your next great adventure?

El Coyote Expedition [ECE]: Friday, April 24th through Sunday, April 26th, 2026 // New Mexico’s Gila National Forest // Approximate Route Distance: 325 to 350-Miles // Approximate Elevation Range: 4,375 to 9,000-Feet // Areas of exploration will include Gila East, Gila North, Black Range, and Great Divide Trail // New Mexico Black Range’s boldest Gila traversal is geared towards overlanders with moderate to advanced experience levels. The El Coyote Expedition will include a faster pace, longer drive days, minimal instruction and education sessions, and prove more rigorous than NMBR’s other overland-based adventures.

Due to widely varying weather patterns, Springtime overland travels through the Gila region often entails challenging backroad and camp conditions. Snow, rain, below-freezing temperatures, mud, ice, extensive tree falls across roadway (requiring clearing), and difficult driving conditions may be encountered along the El Coyote Expedition route. Those that enjoy a more leisurely pace, less demanding driving conditions, more frequent scenic stops/breaks, and expanded educational and training opportunities should consider NMBR’s other overland-based trip offerings.
