Glenn and I are taking you to a city that holds a deeply special place in our hearts: Athens, Greece. As a full-time wheelchair user who prioritizes travel with wheelchair accessibility, I was thrilled to discover that today's Athens offers a level of thoughtful design making it possible to explore 2,500 year old history with total ease.
Why Athens Shines for Accessible Luxury Travelers
Hotels That Redefine Comfort: We love properties that make luxury inclusive. You can stay right in the center at the historic Hotel Grande Bretagne with its seamless elevator access to their famous rooftop, or enjoy the remarkably spacious, barrier-free layouts at the food-centric Ergon House Athens. If you want a resort feel, the Four Seasons Astir Palace on the Riviera is incredible, featuring smooth ramps connecting every pool and restaurant.
Historic Meets Modern: The ancient sites are more welcoming than ever. We highly recommend using the dedicated accessible elevator on the Acropolis North Slope. Standing in front of the Parthenon is breathtaking, and booking a private guide makes the authorization logistics invisible so you can simply take in the view.
Accessible Cultural Experiences: The Acropolis Museum is a brilliant example of inclusive design, fully ramped with glass floors that let you view the excavations right beneath your wheels. We also loved spending an afternoon at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, which is completely barrier-free and effortless to navigate.
Getting Around Made Easy
The Athens Metro is a fantastic option. It is clean, modern, and features elevators and level boarding at most major stations.
For complete peace of mind on airport runs or trips out to Cape Sounion, we always book a private car. It removes the stress of luggage and navigating unfamiliar streets.
While the modern areas are smooth, historic neighborhoods like the Plaka do have some uneven cobblestones, but not as bad as some other European cities. We quickly learned that where the pavement falls short, the famous Greek hospitality steps in. Locals and staff are incredibly kind and always ready to help.
Traveler Tips
Plan your visit for the fall or spring. You will avoid the punishing summer heat and enjoy perfect exploring temperatures.
The Greeks eat late! If you show up for dinner at 7:00 PM, you will likely be the only ones there. Head to Tudor Hall or Liondi around 9:00 PM for the best atmosphere.
Pick up a bottle of Mastiha at the airport duty free before you fly home. This sweet, pine-infused liqueur became our absolute favorite after dinner ritual.
Athens is a vibrant city that truly rewards insider knowledge, and it promises a getaway that feels both sophisticated and deeply welcoming.
Athens is the perfect example of how thoughtful planning can turn a historic, challenging city into an effortless luxury escape. What is your favorite accessible European city?
