Planning note for anyone eyeing Hoover Dam this week: it's still closed to visitors. The dam shut its doors to the public back in late July after a cableway problem, and there's no reopening date yet, so the visitor center and the walk-down tours are off the table for now. Here's the thing though, one of the best angles on the dam was always from the air. The West Rim flights we book head out over Lake Mead, the Colorado, and right past the dam and the bypass bridge on the way to the canyon. Looking at the week ahead, this is the stretch of the calendar our Utah regulars quietly wait for. Summer's heat has backed off, the midday temperatures up at Bryce and Zion's elevation are comfortable for walking again, and the big summer crowds have thinned out. Planning the Page, Arizona day? A few things worth knowing. It's a longer drive from Las Vegas, so it's an early start and a full day. Antelope Canyon is a guided walk through narrow sandstone, so closed-toe shoes and a light layer help. Horseshoe Bend is a short walk out to the overlook with no railings at the edge, so keep an eye on kids.

Bring water, and don't overpack the day. The slot-canyon light is best when you're not rushing.

A thing guests mention a lot in reviews of the air tours: the pilot makes the trip. People come back talking about how their pilot pointed out landmarks the whole way and made the canyon make sense from above, not only look pretty.

One more for the week: the cooler temperatures make this a good stretch to get off pavement. The ATV and UTV days run out of Las Vegas into backcountry you'd never reach otherwise, from high desert trails to the old mining ground around Eldorado Canyon.

Gear's provided and the trails are wide open this time of year, with the dust and the quiet and not much else.

For the week ahead: the evenings are cooling off and the sun's setting earlier, which makes it a good stretch for seeing Las Vegas from the air after dark. You lift off once the Strip lights up and float over the whole glowing valley, with your pilot calling out the landmarks below.

It's a short outing, easy to slot into a night when you've got a couple of hours free.

The part guests never see happens before sunrise. The coaches get checked and stocked, the water and granola go aboard, and the drivers map the day's pickups across the valley so nobody gets missed. Twenty-plus years in, that morning routine runs like clockwork.

Up in the high country, fall shows up before it does down in the desert. As the nights cool, the aspens and cottonwoods around Bryce and Zion start to turn, and the light picks up that clear, crisp edge. Bryce's orange hoodoos against a little early gold is a good look.

It's a long day out of Las Vegas, both parks in one go, and the cooler temperatures make the walking a lot easier than midsummer.
