are named after Captain James Lawrence, best known for his last words, “Don’t give up the ship!” He yelled that to his crew during a battle as commander of the U.S Chesapeake in the War of 1812. Our most famous son, by far, is David Crockett. He came to fame here while this area was still the American frontier. Crockett was a gifted hunter, captivating orator, local businessman and U.S. Congressman who became a hero in the Battle of the Alamo in Texas. You could easily spend a weekend in southern Tennessee and never realize this area exists.

Lawrence County sits just above the Alabama line and holds the largest Old Order Amish settlement in the South. But it is a lot more than just a quiet drive through the countryside.

You can spend your morning buying fresh produce and handmade goods directly from local families around Ethridge. By the afternoon, you can be hiking around the same creeks and waterfalls where Davy Crockett once ran a gristmill.

The food scene here is surprisingly deep. You can eat smoked barbecue right in the middle of Amish country or grab a classic burger at the local depot.

It is the kind of place where things move a little slower, but you can still easily fill an entire weekend.

Comment AMISH COUNTRY and we'll send you our full guide to the area.
