🎣 Big Fish Friday 🎣
This week’s spotlight goes to Chris Key, who landed this huge 🇺🇸AMERICAN Paddlefish—featured in Kentucky Afield’s weekly Ones That Didn’t Get Away!

Paddlefish are one of the most fascinating fish species found in Kentucky waters. Here are some fun facts about this prehistoric native:

🔍 Anatomy: That long, paddle-shaped snout? It’s called a rostrum, and it’s covered in electroreceptors that help the paddlefish detect zooplankton—the microscopic critters that make up most of their diet!

📜 Regulations: Daily limit: 2, Possession limit: 4. Size limit: none. There are special regulations depending on the location and method used, so be sure to check the latest rules in the Fishing & Boating Guide!

📍 Range: Paddlefish are most often found in the Ohio River and its larger tributaries, but they can also be spotted in major reservoirs with large river-like tailwaters.

⚠️ Conservation Note: Paddlefish populations declined sharply in the 20th century due to the construction of dams. These barriers disrupted natural river flows, degraded water quality, and blocked access to critical spawning grounds.

🌊 But there’s hope: recent efforts to remove obsolete dams on Kentucky’s rivers are helping to restore natural habitats and improve conditions for native species like the paddlefish. A big win for fish and our rivers!
