🏛️ TIME TRAVEL TUESDAY 🏛️
In the early 1900s, League City was buzzing with growth—and by 1909, George Washington Butler made a bold statement by constructing the town’s first brick building at the corner of Michigan Street and 2nd Street.

This two-story, L-shaped structure was a true community hub:
🛒 A bank, grocery, and drug store on the ground floor
🩺 Offices for a doctor, dentist, and real estate agent upstairs

Around the same time, the town welcomed new businesses including a telephone company, feed store, hotel, Schenk’s Bakery, Lawrence Broom & Mop Factory, and the Kilgore Lumber Company—marking an era of entrepreneurial energy.

📍 Today, the first story of the original Butler Building lives on, beautifully restored as Butler's Courtyard (122 N Michigan Ave.), a stunning wedding and event venue. You’ll also find the stylish Bar 1909, a perfect stop for a handcrafted cocktail, glass of wine, or local brew before, during or after any Historic District event.

🌳 TIME TRAVEL TUESDAY 🌳
📸 This photo, taken in 1901 and later made into a postcard, shows Main Street (now Second Street) looking toward the railroad station.

⏭️ Fast forward to to 1907, when a community beautification project took root—literally. Spearheaded by the Butler family and John C. League, the plan was simple but powerful: line the town with majestic live oak trees.

Following Acadian tradition, the Butlers brought oak acorns from their native Louisiana when they settled in Texas in the mid-1800s. By the 1870s, George W. Butler was already planting them around his ranch—some of which still stand today along E. Main and E. Wilkins Streets, between S. Kansas and Park Avenues.

🌱 In 1907, the family brought in railroad cars full of live oaks to distribute throughout the community. Trees were sold for $4, but many were gifted to those unable to pay—part of their vision to plant an oak in every yard.

Now more than 100 years old, these iconic Butler Oaks are a living legacy and one of the most defining features of League City’s Historic District.

🌳 Take a stroll through these streets as you enjoy a Historic Homes Tour or peruse local art on White Linen Night under the shady oaks planted so long ago.

🕰️ TIME TRAVEL TUESDAY 🕰️
Let’s stroll through history at Fairview Cemetery, established in 1900 and still active today in League City’s Historic District.

This peaceful spot holds the stories of Civil War, WWI, and WWII veterans, including members of the Magnolia Rangers and the Women’s Army Corps. It also honors the legacy of Japanese immigrants, including Seito Saibara, who helped pioneer Texas rice farming in the early 1900s.

Once the site of Decoration Day picnics, with hymns, poems, and flower-strewn creeks, Fairview is a quiet reminder of the people who shaped this community.

📍 Visit at 901 N. Kansas Ave and experience the heritage resting beneath the oaks.
