Some Alaska Ferry History!!!

๐Ÿšข Throwback: When the Alaska Ferry Docked in Seattle
For nearly two decades, Seattle was the southern gateway to Alaska on the Alaska Marine Highway System. From the late 1960s until 1989, AMHS ferries sailed from Pier 48, connecting the Pacific Northwest with the Inside Passage and the Alaska Highway via Haines.

Originally, the state had no plans to extend the system past Prince Rupert, BCโ€”but persistent rockfall issues along BC Highway 16 and challenges connecting with Canadian ferries pushed Alaska to look south. Both Seattle and Bellingham made strong bids, and Seattle ultimately became the southern terminus.

On September 29, 1989, the MV Columbia pulled away from Pier 48 for the final time, ending an era many today may not even remember. A week later, our Washington port officially moved north to Bellingham, closing Seattleโ€™s chapter in AMHS history.

Today, itโ€™s hard to imagine an Alaska ferry docked in downtown Seattle with the Space Needle in viewโ€”but for a generation of travelers, it was the start of the journey north.

IMPORTANT NEWS

We wanted to address some recent concerns regarding the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) and ferry service to Prince Rupert. In cases where false information circulates on social media, we believe it's essential to respond with the facts.

๐—ฆ๐—ข๐—Ÿ๐—”๐—ฆ: The M/V Kennicott has not lost its SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) certification. The ship is built to SOLAS standards, and there is no such thing as a SOLAS "license." Safety remains a paramount concern, and our vessels undergo regular inspections and maintenance to ensure compliance.

๐— /๐—ฉ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ธ๐—ฎ:: We appreciate your patience as we work on assessing the M/V Matanuska. The 60-year-old vessel will be scheduled for a hull scan to help AMHS determine the best path forward. Rest assured, we are committed to maintaining the safety and reliability of our fleet.

We understand your concerns and value your support as we continue to provide vital transportation services to Alaskan communities. If you ever come across false information about AMHS, know that we'll be here to set the record straight with the facts.
