It’s Field Trip Friday, and today we’re off to lovely Phippsburg, Maine for the Popham trifecta - Popham Colony Site, Fort Popham, and Popham Beach. Rival to Jamestown without the same staying power, the colonial history of the area dates back to 1607. Nowadays, Popham is one of Maine’s most beautiful and popular beaches. One of the coolest things about this work has been getting to discover places new to me in the White Mountains (or ones from childhood I can’t really remember!) Arethusa Falls is one of those places. Midweek, past peak - the trail wasn’t crowded and the hike was just what I was looking for after a busy day in North Conway. I’ll definitely be back!

That’s a wrap on Spooky Tales of the White Mountains! Did you catch all four stories? Had you heard of any of these tales before?

All four stories from a book that started my interest in White Mountains history when I was a kid: Shrouded Memories by Floyd W. Ramsey. It was so fun to reread these stories and adapt them to share. I tried to select ones that are a bit lesser known! Bugbee-Towne was for sure the one that gripped me the most when I was younger - add arsenic to the list with quicksand as things I thought I’d have to worry about as an adult 😆

Which was your favorite?

Have you ever noticed these signs in Sugar Hill? I thought of them recently when I was researching the Hotel Lookoff. There are a number of things I love about these - the fact that they’re still standing is number one! Notice the Lisbon text at the top? Sugar Hill was a part of Lisbon until 1962 (NH’s youngest town!) Town names and hotel names are given equal prominence here - Pecketts was a large inn in Sugar Hill where the first ski school in America was (more on that this winter), Hotel Lookoff and Sunset Hill House were also grand hotels in Sugar Hill, Forest Hills another grand hotel in Franconia, and Profile refers to the Profile House in Franconia Notch. Obscured by the bushes is the town of Easton. The second slide has a few differences, including Sugar Hill train station listed at the top. Pretty cool, right?
