This time 5 years ago, one of the rail cars was being moved as work was underway on our Lincoln Depot 🙂

It has been many years since a rail car has been seen on Chicago Street and this morning's scene offers a good opportunity to show a little bit from the past :-)

For those of you wondering what I am talking about, Chicago Street was once a thoroughfare for an interurban rail system that operated from the early 1900s to the 1960s. The interesting part is that a train could be seen traveling down the middle of Chicago Street while cars navigated around it. In the inset of this photo, you can see a good example of the sight one could see as the interurban passed though. If you are interested in more information about the interurban rail system through Lincoln and other interesting railroad information, visit this Finding Lincoln Illinois web page: http://findinglincolnillinois.com/railroadpage.html.

I hope you enjoyed this little tidbit from the past. If you're not a fan of Explore Logan County, please help us out by "liking" our page and sharing this post. Your support is greatly appreciated :-)

Lincoln Container Construction – Lincoln, Illinois
November 1965

As a continuation of our post last week documenting the demolition of the Lincoln Container facility (linked below), we’d like to share some photos going back to when this same section of the facility was being built.

This set of photos begin in November 1965 when dirt was just beginning to be moved on the expansion of the facility. Shown in the photos are the beginnings of the North warehouse as well as the “new” glass production line and furnace building (the original facility was built in the 1940s).

Each photo has a dedicated description highlighting different aspects of each photo.

Lincoln Container Demolition – Lincoln Illinois

The skyline in Lincoln is quickly changing as demolition continues at the old Lincoln Container site (1200 N. Logan Street) which closed in early 2019 under ownership of Ardagh Group. The facility went by several names since its beginning in the early 1940’s and was commonly known as the “bottle factory” which produced various glass containers for numerous companies. Its closing was a tough blow for those that made their livings there and for the local community in which the facility stood as a staple of Lincoln’s once thriving manufacturing sector for nearly 80 years.

The photos on this post document some of the demolition process that has been ongoing for the last month (at the time of this post).

‼️ Starting next Tuesday, September 29th, 2020, we’ll be posting historic photos from the original construction of this facility so make sure to check back for those next week! 😀‼️

Happy Lincoln Christening Day...167 Years Young!

What do Lincoln, watermelons, and Lincoln have in common? Turns out that it is quite an interesting story...read below to find out :-)

Abraham Lincoln (portrayed by George Rohrer) is handed a large slice of watermelon in preparation for the christening of the town of Lincoln with watermelon juice as part of the Lincoln Centennial christening re-enactment in honor of the original ceremony that took place on August 27th, 1853, 167 years ago. Lincoln, Illinois is the only city named for and christened by Abraham Lincoln before he became famous :-)

The re-enactment took place in Elm Park which was located along the railroad track in the 100 block of S. Chicago Street between Broadway & Pulaski streets (now Neal Tire and Auto Service). Larry Shroyer was on site to capture this amazing event. The main characters in this re-enactment, left to right are James T. Hickey (Abraham Lincoln scholar from Elkhart) as Virgil Hickox, George Rohrer as Abraham Lincoln, John R. Parker as town proprietor John B. Gillett and Bob McCarthy as town proprietor Robert B. Latham.

Today, the christening site is marked by a watermelon sculpture and a Looking for Lincoln wayside on the grounds of the Lincoln Depot (101 N. Chicago St.) commemorating the christening event.

Located southwest of Lincoln, Illinois toward Middletown is the site of Lucas Chapel Cemetery. The old chapel bell is all that remains as a marker for the chapel building surrounded by a small cemetery with many of markers dating back to the civil war timeframe. The site of this chapel/cemetery is very close to a town site called Albany, which was surveyed by a young Abraham Lincoln, but never materialized.
