Happy Lincoln Christening Day...167 Years Young!
What do Lincoln, watermelons, and Lincoln have in common? Turns out that it is quite an interesting story...read below to find out :-)
Abraham Lincoln (portrayed by George Rohrer) is handed a large slice of watermelon in preparation for the christening of the town of Lincoln with watermelon juice as part of the Lincoln Centennial christening re-enactment in honor of the original ceremony that took place on August 27th, 1853, 167 years ago. Lincoln, Illinois is the only city named for and christened by Abraham Lincoln before he became famous :-)
The re-enactment took place in Elm Park which was located along the railroad track in the 100 block of S. Chicago Street between Broadway & Pulaski streets (now Neal Tire and Auto Service). Larry Shroyer was on site to capture this amazing event. The main characters in this re-enactment, left to right are James T. Hickey (Abraham Lincoln scholar from Elkhart) as Virgil Hickox, George Rohrer as Abraham Lincoln, John R. Parker as town proprietor John B. Gillett and Bob McCarthy as town proprietor Robert B. Latham.
Today, the christening site is marked by a watermelon sculpture and a Looking for Lincoln wayside on the grounds of the Lincoln Depot (101 N. Chicago St.) commemorating the christening event.
