Like and follow for events, outdoor activities, history, shopping, dining, insider's tips, and much more. Litchfield, named for the cathedral city of Lichfield in Staffordshire, England, is a town rich with all the amenities that make a great destination—history, scenic beauty, outdoor activities in abundance at stunning venues, sports, shopping, dining, imbibing for connoisseurs (of coffee, wine,

and spirits), community events and great people! A recent survey of new residents ranked Litchfield’s natural resources and quiet hospitality as the top draws, and our amenities include the 4,000 acres of the White Memorial Foundation (more than 35 miles of trails), the gorgeous 510-acre Topsmead State Forest (home to the English Tudor style cottage of a brass industry heiress and miles of trails), the Litchfield Land Trust, with its expanding greenway, the Litchfield Hills Audubon Society and its Boyd Woods Sanctuary, and Bantam Lake, Connecticut’s largest natural lake and home to a state boat launch, a campground, the Litchfield Hills Rowing Club and the Bantam Lake Yacht Club. So the opportunities are almost boundless for hiking, mountain biking, boating, swimming, fishing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and more. Each June, the center of town also buzzes with the excitement of the world-famous Litchfield Hills Road Race, as well as the Gallery on the Green event the day before. Before or after outdoor activities, visitors and residents enjoy Litchfield’s collection of artisan coffee shops, scratch bakeries, breakfast spots, and fine restaurants—as well as the award-winning spirits of the Litchfield Distillery, the wines of Haight-Brown Vineyard, and the just-harvested bounty offered by vendors at the seasonal Litchfield Hills Farm Fresh Market. The town offers fabulous shopping with the difficult-to-find local and personal touch, in the historic center of town, in the increasingly hip Bantam Borough, and along the main thoroughfare (Route 202). An independent toy story, sophisticated clothing boutiques, jewelry, art galleries—that’s just a small sampling. Community resources where intriguing things are always happening include the Litchfield Community Center, the Litchfield Historical Society and The Oliver Wolcott Library. The Wisdom House Retreat & Conference Center, as well as Lourdes in Litchfield Shrine, are also popular attractions. And finally, the town’s history. As the State of Connecticut affirms on its tourism website, Litchfield is truly a revolutionary town. It was home to Colonel Benjamin Tallmadge, commander of the 2nd Connecticut Light Dragoons and Washington's spymaster during the Revolutionary War, as well as famous patriot Ethan Allen, Harriet Beecher Stowe (“Uncle Tom’s Cabin), and Tapping Reeve, who founded the first law school in America, which is preserved by the historical society and open as a museum. Many of the town’s fine historic properties are also open to the public once a year as part of Litchfield Open House Day in July. On your way into or out of Litchfield, why not take the road less traveled and enjoy the beauty of the Milton, Northfield, and East Litchfield sections of one of Connecticut’s largest towns by area.

The Connecticut Restaurant Association hands out more than a dozen CRAZIES awards each December to the top restaurants, chefs, servers, bar staff, and other professionals across the state, and Litchfield establishments have collected plenty of nominations and awards in recent years.

In 2024, Materia Ristorante in Bantam won the award for Restaurant of the Year in Litchfield County, and the Server of the Year award went to Christopher Hodson from Materia – whose Chef David DiStasi was named Connecticut Chef of the Year in 2023, when Materia Ristorante also won Restaurant of the Year Award for Litchfield County. (That’s a partial list not including Litchfield’s many nominees and earlier award winners, including At The Corner for Regional Restaurant of the Year, West, in 2021.)

Public nominations for the 2025 CRAZIES are open and you can have a say in which restaurants and professionals are nominated this year – as well as helping influence the selection of eventual winners, notably in the People’s Choice category.

You can submit nominations through midnight on Sunday, Sept. 21, in all categories by filling out this online form:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CRAZIES2025Nominations

Info about the CRAZIES selection process a nomination toolkit can be found at ctrestaurant.org/news/crazies-awards-nomination-toolkit

In addition to public nominations, two other groups are key in deciding who wins awards, including more than 50 chefs, restaurateurs and past winners who submit nominees. There’s also a nominating panel that includes invited members of Connecticut’s media community who cover the food scene and meet in September for a nominating luncheon.

Following a kickoff party, public voting begins, giving the public a chance to vote for their favorite finalists in each category.

The People’s Choice Award is the overall winner exclusively chosen from the voting public – meaning that’s where you can have the greatest say.

In mid-to-late November, the nominating panel casts final votes based on the list of finalists announced at the kickoff party, and prior to the gala in December, the association collects the final results from the public voting and nominating panel to determine the winners in each category, which are kept secret until being announced live on stage during the gala.

Don't let summer slip away without taking advantage of the wonderful places in Litchfield for a classic picnic!

The White Memorial Conservation Center is home to many picnic tables in scenic spots, including the one shown here in the Activity Field below the Conservation Center. https://whitememorialcc.org/

Other prime spots around town with picnic tables, benches, or expansive lawns where you can lay out a blanket, include the following (and please note that visitors should carry out everything they carry in and not leave food behind.)

🧺 Topsmead State Forest, where there are a few picnic tables and benches available, and you can spread a blanket out on the lawn.

🧺 Mt. Tom State Park, which has picnic areas equipped with tables and grills, making it a great spot for family gatherings.

🧺 There are benches along the trails at the Boyd Woods Audubon Sanctuary of the Litchfield Hills Audubon Society LHAS that are great spots to pause with, say, a sandwich and a beverage. https://lhasct.org/boyd-woods-sanctuary/

🧺The Litchfield Land Trust has a viewing platform overlooking Granniss Pond in the Prospect Mountain Preserve that's not a picnic spot per se but could be a perfect place to linger over a bagel and a coffee or a sandwich and a cold drink. https://litchfieldlandtrust.org/our-preserves/

🧺 Litchfield Town Beach and SandyBeach are great spots for picnics. (Both are open on a fee or permit basis).

Bantam Cinema & Arts Center Executive Director Robert Kwalick was at the Bantam Community Farmers Market Friday to raise awareness about this local gem that shows top first-run movies as well as squeezing some classics and plenty of special events with A-list guests.

Coming up Aug. 29, for example, is a big screen 50th anniversary showing of the summer scare classic "Jaws". 🦈 Screenings continue through Sept. 3, but opening night features a Q&A and book signing with Christopher Shaw Myers, nephew of Jaws actor Robert Shaw and author of "Robert Shaw: An Actor's Life on the Set of Jaws and Beyond."

Robert Shaw played the shark-obsessed fisherman Quint in the original "Jaws." There's pretty much consensus among critics and fans that Shaw gave the most iconic and memorable performance, including the chilling USS Indianapolis monologue, a scene that was largely improvised and showcased his talent. Many believe that his performance was so strong he should have received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Get tickets for the 50th anniversary screenings of "Jaws" here:

Oh, and in addition to events like this and the first run movies, the cinema has great concessions, including craft beer and wine, and just created an enclosed outdoor seating area in front of the cinema where movie and event guests can enjoy a snack or beverage while waiting for felllow guests to arrive ... or linger to discuss a film.

The Plein Air Litchfield painting festival returns in stylishly expanded fashion for its second year in a little more than a month!

This year’s festival will take place from Sept. 30 to Oct. 5 and feature a series of events, including the gala art show and sale on Oct. 4 in the historic Firehouse property of the new boutique hotel Belden House & Mews.

Thirty-three nationally acclaimed artists will be painting Litchfield's most scenic locations throughout the week and competing for $8,500 in awards.

Plein Air Litchfield Judge of Awards Eric Forstmann will curate the paintings submitted for judging and name the winners at the gala. Tickets to the gala start at $25 and can be purchased on the Plein Air Litchfield website by clicking the “Donate” button. https://bit.ly/4outPIp

Plein Air Litchfield began as a weekend long event in 2024 and was so successful (more than $10,000 in paintings sold in one evening) that organizers expanded it into a weeklong festival.

It is produced by Art Tripping a Litchfield nonprofit, and is being planned and presented by a committee that includes Art Tripping principal and Economic Development Commission member Michele Murelli, LLitchfield Historical SocietyExecutive Director Jessica Jenkins, award-winning plein air artist Jim Laurino, events planner Sarah Kelley, Susan Coviello, formerly of Cape Ann Plein Air, artists Ellie Boyd and Zufar Bikbov, Pam Corning, and others.
