Happy Halloween! 🎃 We sailed Virgin Voyages the last week of October, and nobody warned us a giant octopus would show up to the party.

Scarlet Night is when the whole ship goes red. Everyone dresses in red, the pool deck glows, the show turns a little spooky, and the dance floor keeps going late. Katie and I still talk about it.

Would you dress up for a themed night at sea, or are you more of a watch-from-the-rail type? Tell us below 👇

On our first day aboard Carnival Vista, we almost walked right past the best parts of the ship. A violin trio was playing in the atrium, the giant tower kept changing colors above us, and the bartender poured a whole cocktail flight in one move.

Then we got to Lido just in time for the sail-away party, and that night a towel elephant was waiting on our bed. 🐘

It's the little things that make a cruise feel special. When you're on a ship, what's the first thing you go looking for?

🌅 Most people who “do Charleston” never drive out this far.

Bohicket Marina sits between Kiawah and Seabrook, about as far southwest as the road goes before it runs out of island. The creek faces west, the marsh goes flat, and the sky does this for a little over twenty minutes.

No ticket, no reservation. You park at the marina and walk to the water.

If you are staying downtown, this is the evening worth driving for.

🌉 Everybody drives over it. Almost no visitor walks it.

The Ravenel Bridge has a path of its own — Wonders’ Way, 2.7 miles one way, shared with bikes, and it costs nothing. Park on the Mount Pleasant side at the Visitor Center; it is the easier end to start from.

What you get up there is the thing you cannot see from the car: Charleston Harbor underneath you, and container ships running out to sea right below your feet. It is a working port, not a postcard.

Give it a morning. It is the best free hour in the city.

🌳 It is 65 feet tall, 25 feet around, and it costs nothing to stand under it.

The Angel Oak is on Johns Island, a drive out of downtown Charleston, and it is a city park. No ticket, no tour, no time slot. You park, you walk in, and there it is.

The numbers are the part people do not believe until they are standing there:

Somewhere over 300 years old
65 feet high
25 feet around the trunk
One limb that runs 89 feet
17,000 square feet of shade

Three things that make the trip better:

Go on a weekday morning. It is a small park and one tour bus changes the whole experience.
Walk the full loop before you take a picture. The side you arrive on is not the good side.
Give it longer than you think. Most people are back in the car in fifteen minutes and that is the mistake.

🐢 The South Carolina Aquarium has a hospital for sea turtles, and they built it so the public can watch.

Patients sit in their own tanks. Their X-rays are on the wall. There is an operating room you can see into from the visitor side. The turtles get treated, and they go back to the ocean.

There is also a bald eagle named Liberty, up in Mountain Forest, where almost nobody looks for her.

Go to the turtle recovery first. It is the one room where people stop walking.

✈️ If you want the airshow without the airshow crowd, come for the practice days. Same jets, same beach, and almost nobody on the sand to watch them.
🅿️ Park at a tower number, not at the pier. The lots run the length of the beach and the ones away from Main Street are empty and the same price.
🗼 The towers are how you find your way back. Pick one and remember the number, because the sand looks identical in both directions.
🌊 The kelp washes up and gets cleared again, so a messy beach is a few hours old, not a bad beach.
🔥 There are fire rings at the south end. First come, first served, and they go fast on weekends and almost never go midweek.
🧥 It stays cool here longer than people expect. Bring a layer even when the forecast says otherwise.

📩 Picking the week, picking the side of the highway, and knowing which stretch of a long beach you actually want to be on — that is the part we handle for people. Often cheaper than booking direct.

🎟️ Dinner started by handing us a boarding pass.

Not the restaurant. Dinner. The Grand Journey at The Grand at Moon Palace is an immersive show you eat inside of — a dining room that gets projected onto — the table lights up under your plate, your name turns up on your place setting, the walls become open ocean and then a reef, glass orbs come down from the ceiling over the tables, and the courses are timed to all of it. It is included in what you already paid.

That is the part the booking sites cannot show you. The restaurant list looks like a list of names. One of those names is an immersive show, and nobody finds out until somebody tells them.

What is worth knowing:

🦪 Find out what the included dining actually covers before you book anything extra. At a lot of these properties the raw bar and the tasting menus are already yours.
📋 Reserve the specialty restaurants the day you arrive, not the day you want them. The good ones are gone by midweek.
🎭 Ask the front desk for the week’s entertainment schedule when you check in. It is rarely advertised, and the fire show on the sand is worth planning an evening around.
👔 Check the dress code. Several of these rooms will turn you away in shorts, and people find that out at the door.
🌙 Eat late. The dining rooms are calmest at the end of service and that is when you get the table you want.

📩 Which resorts actually deliver on the all-inclusive promise, which ones have a restaurant worth building a night around, and which ones nickel and dime you after you arrive — that is the part we handle for people. Often cheaper than booking direct.
