BCI-Base Camp International

BCI-Base Camp International This is your starting place for river travel. We offer a base-camp at our home in Livingston, so you can organize and prepare for your trip down river.

Providing canoeist and kayakers with information, technical support, logistical assistance and a base camp as they begin there journey down the headwaters of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers. Norm Miller & Kristen Walker provide information, logistics, support, and just about anything a person would need to know for you to get your adventure down the Missouri and Yellowstone River underway. It'

s a means to show our love of the rivers and to help fellow river folks. We have helped fellow paddlers from as far away as Australia and Britain. We have a large back yard for many tents or you're are welcome to stay in our spare room. We have a full kitchen if you need to prep any food or meals, a large garage to store your gear or boats too. We are happy to accept mail if you need anything sent to Montana. It beats trying to do everything from a motel of campground! We typically like to paddle a day with you if it all works out too! We have a wealth of information regarding maps, river travel, history-including Lewis & Clark and mountain men info, do's & don'ts, and much more. Norm has been paddling most of his life. He has paddled through out the world including: 1989-Retraced the 1789 journey of explorer Alexander Mackenzie from Ft. McMurray Alberta to the Arctic Ocean-8 weeks solo. In 2004, Norm retraced the westward journey of Lewis & Clark from St. Louis to the Pacific by kayak and on foot--covering over 3600 miles in 187-days. In 2010 Norm kayaked solo the coast of Thailand from Ko Yao Noi to the border of Malaysia in a time of nearly a month. Kristen has worked in and explored Yellowstone National Park extensively, and enjoys paddling the local rivers including the Jefferson which may be her favorite. She loves paddling her solo kayak whenever she can. Kris has paddled the Wild & Scenic Section of the Upper Missouri River--during a snow storm in August! She also is an American History buff. Throughout the 1990's and early 2000's, Kris was involved in historic fur trade and mountain man re-enactments and rendezvous throughout the US. She has made her own period clothing including buck skin --mt. man style. She enjoys creating and using her hands, from bead work, painting, drawing, making cards and even shooting her flint lock rifles. Norm & Kris are also involved with Yellowstone Gateway Museum in Livingston where they recently completed the Lewis & Clark display. They often explore historic locations throughout the area, especially the area around Three Forks and the Lewis & Clark Trail.

Government agencies were scheduled to begin construction of a $60,000,000 dollar dam on the Yellowstone River, the last major free flowing river in the lower 48 United States. The funds for the dam were originally meant to help an endangered species, the Pallid sturgeon. However, leading scientists believe that the dam may cause the extinction of this ancient species who has lived on earth since the time of the dinosaurs.

Film to be shown in Livingston next month. I was told they are starting construction on the dam next week near Glendive, MT.

He is currently in Russia paddling the Volga River.....if you scroll to about 23 minutes in this video, you will see the interview with Mark.
