Everything Under One Roof with
Iron & Adventure!

www.ironandadventure.com

Iron & Adventure is now my parent company that brings all my passions and expertise together in one place.

While The Chicory House B&B and Dutch Oven Outfitters remain exactly as they are, offering unforgettable stays and hands-on primitive cooking experiences,
I’ve expanded my services to offer even more to full-time seasonal self-employed individuals, travelers, vacation rental hosts, and entrepreneurs.

This new umbrella brand allows me to continue hosting guests and teaching backcountry cooking classes, help others start, grow, and manage their different businesses, and fill in the financial gap that full-time seasonal self-employed individuals like me encounter continually.

Whether you need guidance on launching your vacation rental property, running an online business, bringing your seasonal work into full-time year-round, or just planning the ultimate
Yellowstone National Park adventure,
Iron & Adventure is here to help.

Nothing is going away; this is simply an expansion of what I love to do, now all under one roof.
Same great experiences, just more ways!

Don’t Trash That Broken Cast Iron!

Just because your cast iron skillet has seen better days doesn’t mean it’s done for! Crack it?

Turn it into a rustic serving tray, a clock or even paint it.
Handle snapped? Boom—new doorstop or garden stepping stone.
With a little creativity, that “ruined” skillet can still earn its keep!

Helpful Tips:
1. Sand down sharp edges and season with oil to prevent rust.
2. Repurpose smaller broken pieces as weights for fermenting veggies.

Don't Fear the Cast Iron, It Won’t Bite… Probably!

So, you finally got yourself a shiny new cast iron skillet, but instead of cooking, you just stare at it like it’s judging you?

Relax, it’s not a museum piece—it’s meant to be used!

Tip #1: Season it with a thin coat of oil and bake it like a cake (but don’t eat it).

Tip #2: Just start cooking—bacon is a great first test because, well… bacon. 😆

Sweet, Crispy Apple Fritters – Because Ice Cream Needs a Best Friend!
What’s better than homemade ice cream? Homemade ice cream with warm, crispy apple fritters! These little bites of heaven are golden, fluffy, and dangerously addictive—don’t say I didn’t warn you!

What You’ll Need:
1 cup flour
2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp salt
½ cup milk
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 large apple, diced
Oil for frying

How to Make ‘Em:
1️⃣ Mix dry ingredients in one bowl and wet ingredients in another.
2️⃣ Stir them together, then fold in the diced apples.
3️⃣ Heat oil in your Dutch oven to 350°F (or until a test drop sizzles like it means business).
4️⃣ Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, frying until golden brown (about 2 minutes per side).
5️⃣ Drain on paper towels and dust with powdered sugar.

Serve warm with a big ol’ scoop of Dutch oven ice cream!

Homemade Ice Cream… in a Cast Iron Skillet?! Yes, You Read That Right!
If you thought your cast iron skillet was just for sizzling steaks and baking cornbread, think again! Today, we’re flipping the script and making ice cream—yes, ICE CREAM—right in a good ol’ cast iron pan.
And let me tell you, once you try it, you’ll never look at your skillet the same way again.

How Does This Work?
First things first, you’ll need a cast iron skillet (or a cast iron pâté terrine if you’re feeling fancy). The key here is that cast iron retains cold just as well as it holds heat—so we’re taking advantage of that to make our ice cream base come together like magic!

The “Cold Plate” Trick
To chill your ice cream fast, you can turn your cast iron into a DIY cold plate. Just pop the skillet in the freezer for a few hours OR use the pro trick:

Place a block of dry ice in a pan.
Cover it with a towel and—brace yourself—wet it with rubbing alcohol. This creates an instant icy surface, perfect for rolling ice cream!

The Ice Cream Base
Now, onto the creamy goodness. Mix up:
✔ Evaporated milk for that rich, old-fashioned flavor
✔ Heavy whipping cream (because we don’t do “diet” ice cream around here)
✔ Sugar & vanilla (because obviously)

Pour your mixture onto your super chilled cast iron and start stirring like your life depends on it. Within minutes, you’ll see it thicken into soft, dreamy ice cream.
From here, you can roll it up for rolled ice cream, sandwich it between cookies, or just eat it straight out of the pan. (No judgment.)

I bet you never knew!
Who knew cast iron could be so versatile?!
Next time you’re craving ice cream, ditch the store-bought stuff and give this method a whirl. And if you try this out, let me know—bonus points if you tag me in your photos so I can see your masterpiece!

"Choosing the Right Oil for Cast Iron—Because Not All Oils Are Created Equal!"

Not all oils are cut out for the cast iron life—some will leave your skillet feeling like a sticky mess, and nobody wants that.

Stick with flaxseed, grapeseed, or good ol’ vegetable oil—high smoke point, no drama.

If you're thinking about using bacon grease (it's full of additives/sugar... well, I support that decision for cooking, but maybe not for seasoning unless you enjoy re-seasoning every other day!
