Sea shells hot glued to stems of old silk flowers. The silk flowers were used for something else so I just repurposed these stems into a pretty bouquet for a friend’s birthday.

Painting on palm tree seed fronds. Directions: dry them well. If you want them flat put something heavy to hold them. Once dry clean with a dry cloth. We used acrylic paints and several coats of polyurethane spray. Varnish would make them shiny. Have fun.

Boxes With Trays
Materials:
Paper cutter, Stick glue, Pencil, cereal box, heavy paper or cardstock colored or plain or patterned, lightweight paper like wrapping paper, poster or map. . .

A= Outside paper- 12” x 6 ½”
B= Inside paper- 10 ½” x 4 ¾”
C= Heavy paper for lid- 7 ¼” x 7 ¼”
D, E, F, G= Heavy paper for trays- 6” x 6”
H, I, J, K =Heavy cardstock from a cereal box for side support between outside and inside paper layers- 5” x 2 3/8”
L = Heavy cardstock from a cereal box for lip between outside and inside layers- 5” x 1”

Directions:
Cut out all pieces as sized above
Construct the outside walls of the box as follows:
1. Lay A face down on a flat surface with top of design facing away from you
2. Starting on the left side, place H, I, J, K and L onto A, in that order, with pieces just barely touching, leaving a rim of about ¾” all around the edges
3. Glue H, I, J, K and L onto A in that position, and proceed to next step.
4. Fold the ¾”rim of A down at the corners first then on the sides over the edges of H, I, J, K and L, and glue
5. Place B face up with pattern or design facing you to cover all remaining heavy cardstock, leaving about 1/8” of the folded over edge of A showing all around.
6. Crease at each joint between H & I, I & J, J & K and K & L, set aside to dry. This is the main box.

For C, D, E, F and G follow these steps
1. Lay the paper face down with design on the outside.
2. Fold the opposite corners diagonally, forming an X when the paper is unfolded
3. Fold opposite points of the X to the center, and crease
4. Keeping the points touching in the center, fold two opposite straight edges in to the center so that they are touching, and crease
5. Open and do the same with the other two opposite points
6. Open and lay flat. There will be four small squares in the center of the paper
7. Mark the four outside corners of these squares with a pencil dot
8. Holding the paper like a diamond make a set of parallel vertical cuts from the edge of the paper along the fold, up or down to each dot. There will be four cuts.
9. The four small squares in the center become the bottom of the tray. The remaining paper will be folded in such a way as to form the four sides and to reinforce the bottom.
10. Keeping the diamond orientation, with the large triangle shapes to the left and right, fold the tips of the left and right triangles to the center, and crease.
11. Fold the right and left straight edges to the center, so they touch.
12. Stand the edges upright to form the left and right sides of the tray.
13. While in this position fold in the upper left and right tabs 90° tabs along the upper edge of the four squares to form the upper side of the tray. Do this with the opposite side.
14. To hold the box together fold the remaining two tips over the tabs and into the center; glue them to the bottom. These are the four trays and the largest is the lid.

Glue box H inside and even with the bottom of the main box centered on the third large side

Glue box I inside so that the top is even with the top of the main box centered on the left side

Space and glue boxes J and K inside the main box centered on each side; step them down so that the main box can close

Fold the main box closed and put on the lid

As I sit here overlooking the water I realize that I love the water. Not getting in it. Not floating upon it. I love looking at it. It is comforting and peaceful. Ocean water has its calming waves unless there is a storm. There is the rhythm of the swells, the crash of the waves and the lapping along the shore. River water is a little different. It flows gracefully unless there is a big flood of water spilling it over its banks. Swamp water sits and is filled with activity as bugs and snakes scamper about. Unless of course an alligator chooses to thrash its food around.

If we lived on large water there would be ships to watch. If we lived on small water there could be boats to watch. Watching is good. I don’t need to be on the water to love it.

Oh I almost forgot pool water, spa water and hot tub water. Hot tubs are the best!! It is the only fun water to actually get in!

Drink a glass of water now!

My Go-to

I have an old blue shirt with pearl snaps. Not sure where I got it,but it has always been there among my clothes. At first it was for dresss-up occasions. Then it was my go-to over garment instead of a sweater. The cuffs got all ratted and torn. I finally cut them off. I saved the pearl snaps. Not sure what I would do with them, and they still sit in the sewing kit. The collar got all stained and ratted so I recently cut it off. I still go to this blue shirt even though the sleeves are fraying and it has no collar. Sometimes you have some article of clothing that you just really seem attached to for no specific reason, it is just is your go-to.

Hours pass I’m sitting in my favorite seat. Well actually it is the only seat I can sit in. There are two and one is mine. I have a great view of a flock of red winged black birds and a turkey. The turkey has come a long way over the last week. When we first saw him he was pretty jumpy. The blackbirds would startle, as the often do, and that turkey would bring up his head from grazing and jump a foot off the ground a running for cover. Today the birds take off on some unknown signal and the turkey picks his head up and looks around then, goes back to grazing. All those blackbirds go though the bird seed! They have learned to share instead of spending all of their energy fighting over the food. The green jays have learned to swoop in, get a peanut, and be off. Creatures sure do learn fast. Yep, I like sitting in my favorite seat bird watching.

The wind whistles through the windows. There is always a Texas wind so you learn to embrace it. Winds lifts the awning; grasses bend to its force and tree branches seem to dance. Birds don’t seem to mind they still fly to the feeder. I think they like the wind because it wiggles the feeder and seeds spill to the ground.

With the sun shining hot the wind is a welcome relief. With kite strings in one’s hands it is a force to recon with. Flags stretch straight out and wave to the wind. The wildflowers close to the ground bust open to the sun and give a little wiggle in the wind.

As for me. I remember to hold on to what I don’t want to blow away! And I’m glad the wind blows; fewer bugs stay around.
