BREAKING: The Space Coast is getting its own Brightline station.

The Federal Railroad Administration has awarded the City of Cocoa and the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization (SCTPO) roughly $57.5 million to move the Cocoa Multimodal Station and Rail Project into final design and construction.

The station will rise near US 1/SR 528 and SR 501 (Clearlake Road), about 17 miles from Kennedy Space Center and 10 miles from Port Canaveral. Brightline will build it alongside the city, then operate and maintain it once it opens. The project also adds roughly four miles of additional double track to keep passenger trains moving smoothly through the corridor.

"The Space Coast will no longer be a pass-through for passenger rail," Cocoa Mayor Michael C. Blake said.

Congressman Mike Haridopolos, Brightline Trains Florida CEO Patrick Goddard, SCTPO Executive Director Georganna Gillette, and Brevard County Commissioner Thad Altman also celebrated the award, which caps nearly a decade of planning that started with a 2016 station location study and continued through a 2024 feasibility study.

Once open, the station is expected to give Brevard County residents a direct rail connection to Orlando, Miami, and eventually Tampa. Full article in the comments.
