Lone Rock, Kossuth, Iowa, USA "The Neatest Little Town in Iowa"

https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100010207274071&fref=ts The town was given its name by Mrs. Will (Lillie) Thompson.

Lone Rock - The original community of Lone Rock was located 1-1/2 miles north and 1/2 mile east of the present town. There was a creamery, a general store, a post office and farmhouse at the original settlement. Mrs. Thompson suggested naming the community after the extremely large boulder that lay nestles in the prairie grass on a nearby farmstead. The boulder was used as a landmark for travelers in that part of the county in the early days before any roads were established. In the summer of 1899 when the railroad passed through the township, the town moved south to be located along the new railroad and of course, took the name with them. The plat for Lone Rock was filed by the Western Town Lot Company on April 24, 1899. In 1974, the Lone Rock Development Corporation decided that they would move the large boulder from which the town received its name to the present town of Lone Rock. It was no small task but after 75 years of separation, the "town" and the "rock" were once more reunited. Lone Rock is split down the center with the east side being in Burt Township and the west side is in Fenton Township. The post office was established on 1896. Zip code - 50559

At the College of the Ozarks in Point Look, Missouri, a revolutionary educational model completely dismantles the modern student debt crisis by offering a rigorous education entirely free of tuition. Affectionately known as “Hard Work U”, this institution replaces standard tuition checks with an unwavering commitment to manual labor, requiring every single student to work 15 hours a week on campus plus two full 40-hour work weeks during the academic year. This grueling yet rewarding system ensures that the cost of higher education is paid not in dollars, but in the sweat of the student’s brow, forging a unique campus culture rooted in deep self-reliance and academic focus.

The heartbeat of this self-sustaining community relies on the students conquering intense daily operations, from milking dairy cows at the precise times of 5:00 am and 5:00 pm to butchering their own hogs and grinding their own flour. By directly managing the campus farm, processing their own food, and running essential campus services, these undergraduates trade traditional university fees for hard-earned calluses and real-world grit. They graduate into the workforce entirely debt-free, carrying both a respected degree and an unmatched, deeply ingrained work ethic that textbook learning alone could never replicate.

What do you think, would you farm for tuition?

Requests for support have been coming in faster than LAF can raise the funds to fulfill them, forcing us to temporarily limit applications. This dinner is one of several fundraisers underway to replenish those funds so we can continue saying “yes” to families whose children need serious medical care away from home.

Come hungry, bring your family and friends, and help us support more Iowa families when they need it most.

A huge thank-you to Noe Villarreal and everyone helping make this event possible! Please share and help us spread the word.
