There have been questions about cartel activity in Puerto Vallarta, and whether it affects cruises heading to Cabo or Ensenada.
First, Puerto Vallarta is in the state of Jalisco on mainland Mexico. Most cruise itineraries out of California right now are sailing to Cabo San Lucas (Baja California Sur) and Ensenada (Baja California) which are on the Baja Peninsula. They are completely different states and geographically separated from Puerto Vallarta.
For perspective:
Cabo San Lucas is roughly 600+ miles from Puerto Vallarta (across the Sea of Cortez/Baja region).
Ensenada is over 1,200 miles from Puerto Vallarta.
They are not neighboring port areas.
Currently, Mexico remains at a Level 2 Travel Advisory from the U.S. Department of State (“Exercise Increased Caution”), which has been the general advisory level for several years due to crime in certain regions. That level has not suddenly changed because of this situation.
It’s also important to understand that cruise lines monitor safety conditions constantly. They work closely with local authorities and international security teams. If there is credible risk to passengers, ships simply do not dock. They will reroute, substitute ports, or remain at sea if needed. Cruise lines will not put their passengers or crew in harm’s way.
That said, no matter where you travel... Mexico, Europe, or even within the United States... it’s always smart to stay aware of your surroundings.
At this time, cruises to Cabo and Ensenada are operating normally.
I have clients currently in Cabo and Ensenada, as well as others sailing this week, and they’ve shared that they feel safe and are enjoying their trips.
I’m personally traveling to Ensenada in a few days and feel comfortable doing so. I’ve visited Cabo, Ensenada, and Puerto Vallarta multiple times recently.
Safe travels… and always travel smart.
