A weekend of classic guiding here in Los Angeles with a lovely couple from Houston. Highlights included nice views of California Condor, California Gnatcatcher, LeConte's Thrasher and a very accommodating Mountain Quail. Other nice species included White-headed Woodpecker, Lewis's Woodpecker, Long-eared Owl and Bell's Sparrows. I even turned up a couple of uncommon self found uncommon birds: Black Scoter and White-throated Sparrow. Photos are old ones just to highlight the species mix - as I tend not to take my camera out when guiding.

A really fun day of guiding with some local birders who are still learning the ropes with migrant birds (aren't we all?). We had a fun day exploring a few of my favorite migration sites out in Ventura County tallying lingering Magnolia, Grace's and best of all Golden-winged Warbler. A couple of other highlights included an always appreciated Pacific Golden Plover, and a Clay-colored Sparrow that we found at a local cemetery I like birding here in LA County on the way home. Thanks to Merrilee for the lovely photos of our day out.

A fun morning guiding in the Antelope Valley with a returning client from Maine. We successfully saw and heard (and recorded) LeConte's Thrasher (which was our goal). The first birds we found were paired up and not vocalizing so I found us another bird to record. Other highlights included plenty of Bell's Sparrows, a rare Lark Bunting (that we found in a random field) and a number of migrating Sage Thrashers.

Any day of guiding with a much sought after White-headed Woodpecker is a good day. This cutie is battling it out in my opinion with Lewis's Woodpecker as the best US woodpecker. We had about five on the day and knocked off a clients nemesis bird in the process.

Today was an enjoyable one with a repeat client from Michigan. Highlights included LeConte's Thrasher, Tricolored Blackbird, Townsend's Solitaire, Clark's Nutcracker and White-headed Woodpecker. I only really had time to photograph this Bald Eagle though.

The Los Angeles River. Beautiful birds, less than beautiful scenery. I found this lovely (and rare) pink washed Franklin's Gull along the river on Saturday. Other highlights on the day including Western, Summer and Hepatic Tanager and Dusky-capped Flycatcher as well as some introduced target species like Swinhoe's White-eye, Red-whiskered Bulbul and Pin-tailed Whydah.
