Saturday’s adventure was one for the books! 📚✨ As new vendors for the Black Student Achievement Program with LAUSD, we were invited to create a unique experience for our youth. Our young explorers journeyed through time, discovering the incredible Black pioneers who helped shape old California. From inspiring stories to hands-on activities, the library tour brought history to life for these amazing elementary students. A day filled with learning, inspiration, and connection, as we celebrated the legacies that shaped our state. 🙌🏾🖤 ”

Ralph Bunche won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1950 for his successful mediation of armistice agreements between the new nation of Israel and four Arab neighbors: Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. It was the first, and to date, only time that all parties in the Middle East conflict signed armistice agreements with Israel.

On August 14, 1791, General Toussaint Louverture led the largest and most successful rebellion by enslaved people in the Western Hemisphere. The Haitian Revolution ended in 1804 with Haiti declaring independence from French colonial rule, ending chattel slavery, and becoming the first Black republic in the world. to see photos of this beautiful country.

This first image was the headline of an LA times article after the arrest of a 21-year-old black man named Marquette Frye ignited the Watts Uprising.

This bland editorial didn’t capture the significance of August 11, 1965, because on this day 58 years ago, the Watts community rose up in rebellion. Marquette’s arrest may have been the spark, but police brutality, housing discrimination, and failing school systems lit the flame to this 5-day uprising. There are many more moments of resistance like this that capture the Black freedom struggle. We invite you to remember, learn, and unlearn landmarks of Black August. Can you think of any more?
