The A Gentil Carioca was founded on the 6th of September, 2003, by the three artists who run it until today: Marcio Botner, Laura Lima, and Ernesto Neto. Located in the historic center of Rio de Janeiro, more specifically in the region called Saara, the largest outdoor market in Latin America; A GENTIL was conceived in this melting pot in order to captivate and spread the diversity of art to Brazil and the world.

A Gentil Carioca foi fundada em 6 de setembro de 2003 pelos três artistas que a dirigem até hoje: Marcio Botner, Laura Lima e Ernesto Neto. Localizado no centro histórico do Rio de Janeiro, mais especificamente na região chamada Saara, o maior mercado ao ar livre da América Latina; A GENTIL foi concebida nesse caldeirão com o objetivo de cativar e difundir a diversidade da arte para o Brasil e o mundo.

Lenny Kravitz knows a thing or two about seduction. Kravitz’s Brazilian idyll began more than a decade ago, while he was on tour. “I was traveling all over the country, becoming increasingly attracted to the people, the culture, the music, and the land as well. There’s something incredibly powerful and majestic about this place,” he recalls. The sprawling property encompasses a veritable village of 19th-century Portuguese colonial-style farmhouses and outbuildings, some of which Kravitz converted into guest quarters, a gym, a poolhouse, and a recording studio.

Lenny Kravitz sabe uma ou duas coisas sobre sedução. O idílio brasileiro de Kravitz começou há mais de uma década, enquanto ele estava em turnê. “Viajava por todo o país, sentindo-me cada vez mais atraído pelas pessoas, pela cultura, pela música e também pela terra. Há algo incrivelmente poderoso e majestoso neste lugar”, lembra ele. A extensa propriedade abrange uma verdadeira vila de casas de fazenda e dependências em estilo colonial português do século XIX, algumas das quais Kravitz converteu em quartos de hóspedes, academia, piscina e estúdio de gravação.

The scene Sunday unfolded like something out of dystopian fiction, one eerily familiar to viewers in America: Thousands of supporters of ousted Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro stormed into the capital, Brasília, to protest what they claimed to be a stolen election. The demonstrators flooded and ransacked the government campus—a paragon of Brazilian modernism planned by Lúcio Costa with sweeping white buildings designed by Oscar Niemeyer—as they wound their way through Brasília’s Congress, Supreme Court and Palácio do Planalto, the official presidential office.

UNESCO could confirm that several of the Oscar Niemeyer buildings had sustained damage and that a handful of valuable works of art, including As Mulatas, a painting by Brazilian painter Emiliano Di Cavalcanti estimated to be worth $1.5 million; the stained-glass window Araguaia by French-Brazilian artist Marianne Peretti; and the sculpture A Justiça, an abstract figure of a blindfolded woman that sits in front of the Supreme Court building by Alfredo Ceschiatti, had been either defaced or possibly fully destroyed.

A cena de domingo se desenrolou como algo saído de uma ficção distópica, estranhamente familiar para os telespectadores nos Estados Unidos: milhares de apoiadores do presidente deposto Jair Bolsonaro invadiram a capital, Brasília, para protestar contra o que alegaram ser uma eleição roubada. The campo rupestre is now emerging as the new Brazilian biome due to its singular biodiversity: 40% of the plants living here cannot be found anywhere else in the world, and even representing less than 1% of the Brazilian territory, the campo rupestre holds more than 15% of the entire flora of the country.
