Back in 2017 we were witnesses of the beautiful Cuban people's love. Having bare minimum, many people we met along the way opened their homes, fed us what they could (we weren't asking for it, and they were super happy to give us bread and cheese), asked lots of questions, shared their wisdom, and simply showered us (Las Nenas) with tons of love, and blessings.

We promised to return. We are working on doing just that.

I still remember going to restaurants and been given a sliver of butter, and people outside the restaurant looking into it, and me feeling nauseated because a guy we met (and are still friends with) shared with us that there wasn't any butter available for days.

The tourist were the priority. We stopped taking the butter and only ate the same things Cubans would eat. We stretched our food as much as possible and tried to give as much as possible. Not because it was required, but simply because in Puerto Rico we also have known hunger, and despair and desolation.

This trip took place the year after Hurricane Maria hit our island. The suffering was still fresh. The people we met were so concerned about PR, even when their electricity was intermittent, access to food was scarce, daily. And they had to ration coffee, oil, sugar, flour and personal hygiene products. They still were truly concerned about another country: That is Cuba for you!

We pray for a Cuba, not only free, but a Cuba totally autonomous, and without dictatorship!!!!

🗣️🌅🌍Royal Caribbean acaba de mover un itinerario de crucero completo por algo que no volverá a suceder por un año más.

El 12 de agosto de este año, un eclipse solar total atravesará el Atlántico. Y casi cinco mil personas reservaron la Libertad de los Mares específicamente para observarla desde el medio del océano. Sin contaminación lumínica. No hay edificios que bloqueen el cielo. Solo aguas abiertas y una luna que se desliza perfectamente frente al sol.

Pero había un problema. La ruta original solo iba a poner el barco en la zona de totalidad de noventa y cuatro a noventa y ocho por ciento. Lo que suena lo suficientemente cerca hasta que entiendes que la diferencia entre el noventa y el ocho por ciento y el cien por ciento de la totalidad es la diferencia entre un cielo impresionante y un momento que detiene tu corazón por completo.

Así que Royal Caribbean escuchó. Cambiaron la ruta. Lisboa se ha ido. Vigo es reposicionado. Le Havre se añade. Y el 12o de agosto, ese barco estará sentado directamente por debajo del cien por ciento de la totalidad.

Esto es lo que realmente es este momento. Una línea de cruceros tomando una decisión que les cuesta dolores de cabeza logísticos y renegociaciones portuarias porque todo el punto del viaje fue el eclipse. No los puertos. No la comida. No el entretenimiento.

El cielo. Y lo hicieron bien.
