What we’re looking at: Elmgreen & Dragset at Pace Gallery

Last Friday, Pace Gallery Los Angeles hosted author Ottessa Moshfegh in conversation with artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset to mark the opening of “The Alice in Wonderland Syndrome.” Elmgreen & Dragset, the Berlin- and Oslo-based Scandinavian artist duo known for their large-scale installations and public sculptures that probe social conventions and institutional frameworks, found particular inspiration for this exhibition in Moshfegh’s celebrated novel My Year of Rest and Relaxation.

The artists explored themes of isolation, wonder, and the mundane, while the conversation reflected on how characters in their work often feel real and reveal truths about themselves. Upon entering, visitors encounter a life-size sculpture of a gallery assistant sleeping at her desk, startling viewers before they move into the first room, where marble figures of real people are surrounded by dizzying mirrors of spiral blue skies. The final room presents the same subjects at half scale, playing with perception and proportion, and evoking both delight and contemplation. Across literature and sculpture, Moshfegh and the duo revealed a shared drive to engage audiences, making them laugh, wonder, or marvel.

What we’re looking at: Nancy Buchanan at The Brick in Los Angeles.

“Truthfully, Nancy Buchanan: A Retrospective” presents the lifelong artistic journey of Nancy Buchanan within the Los Angeles community. Beginning in the 1970s, Buchanan’s multimedia practice spanning performance, installation, and painting, navigates her layered interests in feminism, politics, and environmentalism. Each gallery room highlights a distinct theme, brought to life through works such as miniature suburban houses, chocolate-coated bones in a heart-shaped box, and an immersive room filled with synthetic hair. Buchanan’s enigmatic and rebellious spirit shines through in the carefully orchestrated interplay of texture, vibrant imagery, and text.

Curated by Buchanan’s former student, artist Laura Owens, alongside The Brick’s Catherine Taft, the retrospective features a fearless female gaze that shifts and swirls throughout the exhibition, keeping viewers engaged at every turn. Bold and unflinching, the show offers both a reflection on restrictive histories and a provocation toward material futures.

What we’re looking at: Fictions of Display at MOCA in LA.

Bringing together props, stages, pedestals, avatars, and even live performers, Fictions of Display explores the intertwined worlds of theater, performance, and exhibition design. At its core are Claes Oldenburg’s The Store works (1961–62), which blur distinctions between art, commerce, and performance, setting the stage for a dynamic presentation from MOCA’s collection.

Curated by José Luis Blondet with Paula Kroll, the show highlights how art objects are never just displayed—they’re staged, acted, and reimagined.
