In 1921, Surfridge was initially developed and became a residential area. Before LAX expansion took over, this was called the Surfridge Estates. Developed by Dickinson & Gillepsie as a beach-front community along a very idyllic stretch of the Pacific Ocean.
This three-mile stretch was quickly populated with high-end Spanish style homes, all providing a majestic view of the Ocean. The intent was to offer an exclusive beach neighborhood to Los Angeles’s emerging entertainment elite. Celebrities such as Mel Blanc, Cecile B. DeMille, and Charles Bickford were some of the first to call Surfridge home.
The city officially purchased Mines Field in 1937 to demonstrate its commitment to aviation development. The Second World War propelled Los Angeles to become an aerospace and military aviation center.
Then on Jan. 25, 1959, “The Jet Age”. AA began first scheduled transcontinental passenger service with a B 707-123 Astrojet, from LAX to Idlewild. By the early 1970s all of the houses had been demolished.
Today, the area is officially preserved and serves as a refuge for endangered species, including the blue butterfly and burrowing owls. And a sweet '55 T-Bird.
