They call Malawi the Warm Heart of Africa, but for me, it’s the place where simple things become extraordinary. A tomato stew simmering on the fire, a child laughing in Chichewa, the rhythm of drums echoing at sunset. Malawi is not just a country it’s a feeling. 🌍❤️ What feeling do you carry from your homeland?”

10 Little Things First-Time Visitors Get Wrong in Malawi and how to do them right

If Malawi is your first stop in Africa welcome! These quick tips will save you time, money, and awkward moments.
1. Start with a greeting. A simple “Moni!” (hello) or “Muli bwanji?” (how are you?) goes a long way. “Zikomo” means thank you.
2. Ask the price first. Before you hop in a taxi or buy at a market, ask “How much?” to avoid surprises.
3. Carry small bills. Cash is common. Keep smaller notes for taxis, markets, and tips.
4. Power = bring a universal adapter + power bank. Outlets/voltage can differ and power cuts happen.
5. Water basics. Stick to bottled or filtered water; ask for ice made from safe water.
6. Dress code. Casual is fine, but modest wins when visiting offices, churches, or rural areas.
7. Sundays are slower. Some shops open late or close early—plan errands for weekdays if you can.
8. Ride apps are limited. Use registered taxis, hotel drivers, or trusted referrals. Exchange the driver’s number for your return.
9. Market manners. Bargain with a smile; it’s normal. If the price isn’t right, say “Pepani, ndidzabweranso” (sorry, I’ll come back) and keep it moving.
10. Be early, be flexible. Traffic or weather can shift timelines. Add buffer time and enjoy the pace—Malawi is called the Warm Heart for a reason. 💙
