it never ceases to amaze me after decades of paddling and observation of these wonderful creatures that i still observe new behaviors not documented elsewhere (to my knowledge). this last week i saw two!! an otter playing very actively (tossing and twirling etc.) with a dead bird as a toy. the other was watching an adult male otter use his "pet rock' to knock scallops, mussels and tasty treats of my dock and surface within feet of me to feast on his efforts. he did this time and time again for at least 30 minutes...so fun to watch. i just love these engaging, intelligent and oh so resilient critters!
